Belgium, Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico City, Paraguay and Peru Have Done It. Why Hasn’t the UK?

Karina-and-her-drawing-of-elephants-in-Circuses-768x1024Circuses are no fun for animals – so three cheers to Mexico City for banning the use of wild animals in performances!

Last month, Mexico City lawmakers made the compassionate decision to stop lions, tigers, elephants and other animals from being forced to jump through flaming hoops, balance on their hind legs and perform other dangerous and bewildering tricks in front of a screaming crowd. When the new law comes into full force, circus owners who continue to use animals could be fined up to $70,000.

Behind the scenes, animals in circuses … Read more.

Putting a Positive Spin on Spiders

web spiderPoor old spiders. The much-maligned little critters often have a hard time of it at the hands of humans – getting squashed, washed down the plughole or sprayed with toxic insecticides.

Recent reports about the rising numbers of false widow spiders in this country have made things even worse, inspiring an epidemic of hysterical spider-swatting, despite the fact that the vast majority of the UK’s 600  species of spiders are completely harmless. As for false widow spiders, they are not aggressive towards humans, and in most cases their bites are no more … Read more.

Minister Promises That Full Wild Animal Circus Ban Will Go Ahead

Good news: we’re one step closer to the full ban on wild animals in circuses that we’ve all been waiting for!

On Tuesday, DEFRA Minister Lord de Mauley confirmed that the government will go ahead with plans to keep all wild animals out of circuses and rightly dismissed an absurd select committee recommendation to water down the ban so that it would apply only to elephants and big cats. “The Government cannot agree to this recommendation”, this week’s report stated explicitly – meaning that camels, zebras, reindeer and other animals will also … Read more.

Hurrah! Government Finally Acts to Ban Wild Animals in Circuses!

At last – wild-animal circuses are to become a thing of the past in England! On Tuesday, a draft bill was tabled in Parliament to stop circuses using animals beginning in 2015 – a move that all British people can celebrate.

zebras wild

This means that, in this country, no more wild animals will be abused in the ring in the name of entertainment. No more elephants, camels or zebras will be denied everything that is natural and important to them, confined to cages or boxcars and dragged around the country and forced to … Read more.

Animal Groups Condemn Circus Consultation Sham

PETA has issued a statement with several other animal protection groups to announce that none will be participating in Defra’s shamefully biased consultation on the use of wild animals in circuses. Animal Defenders International, Captive Animals Protection Society, Animal Aid, Four Paws and Born Free are all boycotting the consultation, which closes April 25.

Last month, many people were understandably misled by a government statement which declared that “wild animals will no longer be made to perform in travelling circuses” and that they would be looking to … Read more.

No End in Sight for Wild Animals in British Circuses

Many of you will have seen the headlines reporting an end to the use and abuse of wild animals in British circuses. There is nothing PETA would love more (well, except an end to the use of all animals in circuses), but sadly, all is not what it seems. In the face of overwhelming public and parliamentary support for a ban, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced that it will press ahead with its circus inspection and licensing scheme and also have another public consultation on the … Read more.

Reindeer Display Launches at Covent Garden Despite Warning

© iStockPhoto / GlobalP

In the run-up to Christmas, London’s Covent Garden Market is displaying live reindeer for people to visit and touch, touting the animals as “Rudolph and his mates“. Reindeer who are used in seasonal displays become easily stressed and afraid when they are jostled and herded into trucks and transported for display around the country.

Reindeer are not domestic animals – they avoid people and retain their wild instincts in captivity. Reindeer who are used as props are denied the ability to engage in natural behaviour. They … Read more.

Happy Animals, Happy Kids

Earlier this week I saw some video footage which broke my heart. Having volunteered for animals for years now, I’m becoming hardened to the things I see, but this was upsetting in so many ways.

It was a YouTube video which someone had recorded at a British circus during the 2010 season. All the footage was from the ring, what the circus were proud for you to see. It was distressing. I won’t link to it here, but there are plenty of videos on YouTube that show similar … Read more.
