Once a year, this week claims to celebrate “butchers’ creativity and passion”, but there is nothing to celebrate about slaughtering and hacking apart innocent, sentient animals. Every year, billions of animals who every bit as capable as feeling pain and suffering as you or I endure a terrifying and horrific experience in abattoirs that ends in their death. Many of us will have seen stories in the media about the Schmallenberg virus, the latest disease to hit animals already suffering in severely crowded and filthy conditions. The virus causes birth defects and miscarriages in sheep, goats and cattle, and it effects milk yields in cows and causes them to have diarrhoea. It is believed to have started in Germany, but cases have now been confirmed at 74 farms in the UK.
In addition to being forced to endure unnatural conditions, farmed animals … Read more.
How would children feel if Spot and Fluffy were stuffed and roasted for Christmas? That’s what we’re asking this holiday season with a new billboard that shows an animal who’s a cross between a dog and a turkey. We decided to run the billboard near Manchester schools in the hope that it will spark a dialogue between kids and their parents.
“Kids love animals, and if they thought about how turkeys feel pain and fear just as dogs and cats do, they’d trade in their drumsticks for a veggie roast in a … Read more.
An application to extend a broiler-chicken unit in Worcestershire that we objected to has been refused. This is great news for up to 168,000 chickens who would have been forced into a life of pain and suffering had the plans been approved.
While we celebrate this great victory, we won’t stop fighting until all chickens raised for their flesh – crammed together into huge, dark, filthy ammonia-laden sheds and forced to grow so large so quickly that they become crippled under their own weight – are free … Read more.
PETA’s “pig” greeted protesters near St. Paul’s Cathedral this week by handing out free vegan sausages and encouraging them to spare a thought for the millions of animals who suffer every day on intensive confinement–style factory farms controlled by major corporations.
On factory farms, pigs have their tails cut off without being given painkillers, calves are torn away from their mothers shortly after birth and chickens are crammed by the tens of thousands into windowless sheds, where the ammonia from their accumulated waste burns their eyes and throats.

During a week that marks both Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday and World Animal Day, we thought it appropriate to take a moment to reflect on these words of wisdom from the “Great Soul”: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. If Gandhi were alive today, how would the UK fare in his eyes?
One of the first pieces of animal rights legislation in the world, the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act of 1822, was introduced in the UK, and we’ve … Read more.
Yesterday saw World Vegetarian Day arrive, which kicks off Vegetarian Awareness Month – a whole month of opportunities to try something new and learn just how great a meat-free diet can be! So many compassionate celebs (and PETA supporters) have already made the decision to ditch meat, including Pamela Anderson, Sir Paul McCartney, Eliza Doolittle, Owain Yeoman, Leona Lewis, Bryan Adams, Russell Brand, and Chantelle Houghton – who recently launched our brand-new vegetarian/vegan starter kit.

Barely a year after Animal Aid first released harrowing footage taken inside UK abattoirs, they have uncovered more abuse. Video footage secretly recorded at Elmkirk Ltd (Cheale Meats) makes for distressing viewing, but astonishingly, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are refusing to prosecute those responsible because the abattoir staff were not consulted about the cameras.
The hidden cameras at the Cheale Meats abattoir recorded staff punching pigs, hitting them with bats, burning their faces with cigarettes and forcing injured pigs to drag themselves into the stun pen. One … Read more.
PETA’s gorgeous Lettuce Lad and Lady were outside Earl’s Court Real Food Festival on Friday giving away meat-free sausage samples to visiting foodies. Judging by the speed at which they were refilling their trays, the vegan treats were a real hit with the crowd, and why not? For those hooked on meat, vegan sausages and other faux meats have all the flavour of your favourite foods, without any of the cruelty.

After hearing of the alarming expansion of kids’ waistbands in the Scottish capital – about one in 10 of its Primary 1 schoolchildren is now considered clinically obese, according to the NHS National Services Scotland – we’ve placed our latest billboard at Crewe Toll, in Edinburgh, in the hopes that residents will take stock of the city’s ballooning childhood obesity problem. The eye-catching advert reads, “Feeding Kids Meat Is Child Abuse. Fight the Fat. Go Veg”.
