Digitally created animal characters are the future of filmmaking, and Noah director Darren Aronofsky would know!
“One of the first promises I made to Russell Crowe when he took on the role”, Aronofsky says, “was that ‘I promise you won’t be standing on a deck with two giraffes sticking out behind you’”. And as he reveals in an exclusive new video interview with PETA US, the director stayed true to his word, using advanced digital effects to create the stunning array of animals who appear in Noah.
“When you’re doing Noah’s … Read more.
Last week, the lovely Louise Redknapp paid a visit to the PETA office in order to judge our 2014 Vegan Fashion Awards. Check out how she got on:
The singer, who made her name in the ’90s band Eternal and has been at the forefront of fashion ever since, confessed that she was astonished by the huge selection of stylish animal-friendly products available right now.
They ranged from bargain high-street finds from the likes of New Look and Miss Selfridge to deluxe designer pieces from Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood as … Read more.
The public killing of Marius, the 18-month-old giraffe, at Copenhagen Zoo on Sunday, which caused public outcry around the world, prompted PETA Germany to send its own message to the zoo’s managers.
The group projected this enormous message in lights at the entrance to the zoo last night:
Marius’ death should be a wake-up call for anyone who still harbours the illusion that zoos serve any purpose beyond incarcerating intelligent animals for profit. What happened in Copenhagen this weekend shocked the world – but zoos around the world quietly kill “surplus” … Read more.
Quila was in a tight spot. On a stormy afternoon in Norfolk, just days before Christmas, this friendly Labrador was swept out to sea and left stranded on a slippery rock, surrounded by water – as her distressed guardians watched in horror.
This is what happened next:
What stands out in the video are the gentleness and care that the rescuers from Happisburgh Lifeboat Crew show to Quila, who was probably experiencing one of the most terrifying moments of her life. After they lift her into the boat, she nestles her head … Read more.
Disturbing footage released last night reveals horrific cruelty to animals on foie gras farms that supply celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. In windowless sheds, row upon row of ducks are kept in tiny filthy cages with no space to move, covered in their own vomit, with painful broken wings and beaks, abscesses, eye injuries and bloody sores. Dying birds collapse panting from illness and exhaustion caused by the relentless ordeal of being force-fed grain through a tube several times a day. After weeks of this misery, the surviving birds are shoved into crates … Read more.
TED Talks are known for being at the cutting edge of technology and innovation, and they give us a glimpse of where society could be heading. So we were both intrigued and excited by entrepreneur Andras Forgacs’ lecture, in which he explains how printing leather – without harming a single animal – is the way of the future.
Sound zany? “[T]his is not so crazy … What’s crazy is what we do today”, Forgacs says. “[W]e raise and slaughter billions of animals to make our hamburgers and our handbags.”
It’s clear … Read more.
Kopi luwak coffee is made from the beans of coffee berries that have been eaten and excreted by the Asian palm civet, a small, shy nocturnal mammal. If you think that sounds unappetising, wait until you hear how cruel it is.
To make the inhumane coffee, civets are often captured from the wild and locked up in small, barren, filthy cages. They’re deprived of everything that’s essential to their well-being, including exercise and a spacious, natural environment.
A PETA Asia investigator visited several civet coffee farms and villages in Indonesia and … Read more.
What kind of person would hit a poodle in the face, whip a kangaroo or electro-shock an elephant?
This 60-second video made by our friends at PETA Germany compiles shocking footage of animals being hurt in the name of entertainment, as trainers use violence to force animals to perform absurd and pointless tricks. It includes heartbreaking scenes of Anne, an elephant who was kept on a circus in Northamptonshire, being chained, beaten and stabbed with a pitchfork.
These hard-to-stomach images make it clearer than ever that the UK needs to ban the … Read more.
Actor, producer and mother Emily Deschanel makes no bones about her beliefs – as a committed vegan, she’s totally appalled by the cruelty of the dairy industry. She stars as forensic anthropologist Dr Temperance Brennan in hit US crime drama Bones, but in PETA’s brand-new video, it’s the horror of factory farming that she’s investigating.
Watch her behind-the-scenes exposé of how cows raised for milk are treated:
As a mum, Emily explains that she doesn’t want to participate in the suffering of other mothers. The idea of having your child stolen … Read more.
Wearing the skin of another animal – an animal forced to live in a cramped, filthy cage before having the hide ripped from his or her back – is a pretty disturbing fashion statement.
For anyone who hasn’t yet grasped that message, this thought-provoking ad should be an eye-opener. Donated by top ad agency Ogilvy & Mather, the video depicts a catwalk show with a twist: the statuesque models are “foxes”, and their grisly outfits include a coat made from dozens of “human arms”.
In reality of course, it’s humans who … Read more.
