‘Strongest Man’ Eats Plants, Loves Animals

He can raise a car clear off the ground, toss huge logs through the air, and lift monster dumbbells. And he hates cruelty to animals. Patrik Baboumian, holder of the “Strongest Man of Germany” title, is a plant-eater!

Like many professional athletes and champion fighters, Patrik recognizes that a healthy plant-based diet gives him the protein and nutrients he needs to build muscle and strengthen his immune system, without clogging his arteries with saturated fat. Patrik also knows that only cowards hurt animals and that one of the most macho things a… Read more.

On World Animal Day, How ‘Great’ Would Great Britain Be in Gandhi’s Eyes?

During a week that marks both Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday and World Animal Day, we thought it appropriate to take a moment to reflect on these words of wisdom from the “Great Soul”: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. If Gandhi were alive today, how would the UK fare in his eyes?

One of the first pieces of animal rights legislation in the world, the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act of 1822, was introduced in the UK, and we’ve continued… Read more.

Miss Earth Contestant: The Best Way to Go Green Is to Go Vegetarian

Wearing a bikini made of lettuce leaves – complemented by a diamante crown – and holding a sign that reads, “Save the Earth: Go Veg”, Miss Earth contestant Maragarita Nazarenko joined PETA outside the largest meat market in the UK today to tell passers-by that the best thing that we can do to protect the environment is to stop eating animals.

“I’ve always been concerned about the health of the planet and my own health, so going vegetarian is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” says Nazarenko, who is… Read more.

Bathing Beauty Shows How Much Water to Produce One Steak

Nearly nude PETA model – and vegetarian – Megan Currie sudsed up in a tub for World Water Week while policymakers met in Sweden to discuss global water issues. The bathing beauty informed passers-by that it takes the equivalent of 50 baths filled with water to produce just one steak. Megan aimed to show people that the best way to fight the worldwide water crisis and clean their conscience is to go veg.

“Not only does the meat industry inflict cruelty, it also wastes huge amounts of water and damages the planet”,… Read more.

Another UK Abattoir Caught Out Inflicting Harrowing Abuse

Barely a year after Animal Aid first released harrowing footage taken inside UK abattoirs, they have uncovered more abuse. Video footage secretly recorded at Elmkirk Ltd (Cheale Meats) makes for distressing viewing, but astonishingly, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are refusing to prosecute those responsible because the abattoir staff were not consulted about the cameras.

The hidden cameras at the Cheale Meats abattoir recorded staff punching pigs, hitting them with bats, burning their faces with cigarettes and forcing injured pigs to drag themselves into the stun pen. One terrified… Read more.

‘Fat Tax’ Starts This Autumn

Have Denmark’s legislators been reading Animal Writes? PETA has long maintained that a tax on meat would help offset its negative impact on our health and the environment, and now it seems that the Danish government agrees with us. Starting in October, the country will levy taxes on certain meat and dairy products, animal fats, and other unhealthy foods.

The tariff will, of course, generate revenue for Denmark, but it is expected to cut healthcare costs as well if people respond by consuming… Read more.

Adele Goes Vegetarian!

Multi-platinum recording artist Adele can melt hearts with her soulful voice, but her actions are saving lives. The singer told Radio 1 that she is leaving meat out of her repertoire.

Like many of her songs, Adele’s inspiration came from love. “Whenever I am about to eat meat, I always see my little dog’s eyes”, she said.

Adele is quite right, of course: cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens and other animals killed for food feel pain and fear, just like… Read more.

Something ‘Fishy’ Going On?

It’s World Oceans Day, and so today, we’re devoting our blog to the millions of individual fish and marine animals who suffer needlessly at human hands.

Fish are intelligent, complex animals who form strong social bonds and communicate with each other, and some even have a mischievous side! Numerous studies have shown that fish feel pain. Fish caught in nets and dragged from their homes experience excruciating decompression as they are pulled to the surface. The pressure can cause their eyes to pop out, and force their stomachs out through their mouths.… Read more.
