More and more people are waking up to the cruel reality of the dairy industry, so the market for alternative non-dairy products is growing faster now than ever before. In the past two years alone, the non-dairy milk market has grown by a staggering 155 per cent in the UK! Producing plant-based milks takes a lot less water and land and results in much less carbon dioxide than producing dairy milks. We’ve put together a guide to some of the best vegan milks and how to use them.

In Owain Yeoman’s opinion, it doesn’t take a mentalist to see that factory farming is a recipe for disaster. That’s why the Welsh-born star of the hit American television programme The Mentalist has just fired off a letter to Powys County Council urging councilmembers not to allow a new industrial-size dairy – a factory farm where 1,000 cows would be artificially impregnated, drugged and used as milk machines – to be built at Leighton near Welshpool. In the letter, Yeoman explains that densely crowded, unsanitary factory farms are breeding … Read more.

Champagne corks are popping at PETA headquarters this evening, as PETA staff celebrate the news that the company they fought to defeat, Nocton Dairies, has withdrawn their plans to build an intensive dairy unit in Lincolnshire. The facility would have likely meant severe suffering for thousands of cows, something PETA pointed out as it campaigned for almost a year to ensure the facility would never see the light of day. More than 6,000 of the 14,000 registered objections received by the district council came from you, our … Read more.

Nocton Dairies Ltd, the company in the centre of a row over bringing a US-style intensive dairy factory farm to the UK, resubmitted their plans last week to build their giant cow “prison” in Lincolnshire, this time claiming that they would reduce the number of cows from 8,100 to 3,770 – a figure that would no doubt quickly climb back up to the originally proposed number via further applications. What do we think? Whether one or 100,000 cows are held there – suffering is suffering.

Following up on the government’s decision to back off a proposal to axe free cow’s milk for schoolchildren (a decision based on Prime Minister David Cameron’s fear of negative publicity rather than concern for public health), I wanted to draw your attention to an excellent article in the London Evening Standard by Dr Christian Jessen, who is best known for shows such as Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies.
The doctor tells it like it is. “Cows’ milk is just that: for cows”, he writes. “Man is the only animal … Read more.

PETA and other animal rights groups are celebrating after learning that Velmur Ltd have abandoned their proposal to build a huge dairy factory farm in Lincolnshire. The development would have sentenced 2,896 cows to lives of misery and suffering.
We owe a big “thank you” to the PETA activists who fought against the proposal by attending local meetings, spreading awareness and updating PETA with developments. This is another example of the success that can be achieved through the efforts of committed activists.
