Harrods Makes Humane Choice on Civet Coffee

Iconic department store Harrods has withdrawn kopi luwak coffee from its stores after revelations about the trade’s cruel treatment of animals and the widespread mislabelling of coffee beans as “wild-sourced”, when they may in fact have come from caged animals.

Kopi luwak, or civet coffee, is made from coffee berries that have been eaten and then excreted by Asian palm civets. It’s a truly bizarre phenomenon – and truly horrible for the animals involved, who are often captured from the wild, kept in tiny cages and forced to eat unnatural amounts of … Read more.

Fortnum & Mason CEO Ewan Venters might note that his former employers, Sainsbury’s and Selfridges and now Brakes, have all rejected foie gras sales, while Fortnum & Mason is shamefully still selling this “torture in a Read more.

Chinese Takeaway With a Side Order of Compassion

New Picture (2)The chips are down for fish and chips – at least according to a new study showing that Britain’s favourite takeaway is now Chinese food. Fewer people tucking into fish suppers is certainly a good thing, as fish have no desire to be dragged out of the sea, killed, battered and served up in a greasy paper package. Vegans can also get behind this trend because all Chinese restaurants offer a tempting selection of animal-free options!

Go Vegan (Like the Easter Bunny)

bunnyThe Easter bunny is vegan: he’s an herbivore, so he doesn’t eat any animal products at all. He doesn’t even drink milk. In fact, if you think about it, you’ll realise that humans are the only species that drinks the milk of another animal. Our bodies aren’t designed to consume milk beyond infancy, which perhaps explains why up to 60 percent of us worldwide are lactose-intolerant.

At Easter, we’re surrounded by images of cute animals and new life. So isn’t it ironic that so many people celebrate Easter with food that is … Read more.
