Eat da Veggies Like da Vinci!

Leonardo da Vinci

Happy Birthday, Leonardo!

Leonardo da Vinci was not only a great artist but also a compassionate person who led a cruelty-free lifestyle. He was such an ardent defender of animals that he sometimes bought caged birds from poultry vendors and set them free. He frequently wrote about cruelty to animals in his Notebooks, writing of the meat and dairy industries, “Endless multitudes will have their little [babies] taken from them, ripped open and flayed and most cruelly cut in pieces” and “Of the beasts from whom cheese is made … the … Read more.

Slaughterhouse Secrets

On Tuesday, the police and food standards inspectors raided a UK abattoir and meat processing firm to find out if they had been passing meat from horses off as beef – the latest development in the ongoing British horsemeat scandal, which has affected major retailers from Tesco to Burger King.

While the authorities have yet to reach a verdict about these particular facilities, at every slaughterhouse in Britain atrocities go on every day that would turn most people’s stomachs.

From being strung up by their legs and given repeated electric shocks to  … Read more.

Animal Abusers on the Loose: £1,000 Reward for Information

A young seagull was shot through the neck with a crossbow in Inverness, and cocktail sausages laced with nails were left on playing fields in Monmouthshire in order to injure dogs – these two sickening incidents of cruelty to animals happened in just the past few weeks in the UK.

Hurting animals is just plain wrong. Society needs to take these shocking crimes seriously, because animal abusers are a danger to everyone. Sick individuals who carry out violence against animals – who can’t report abuse and often can’t fight … Read more.

No Cage Big Enough: Why Zoos Can Never Be Humane

Zoos all over the UK have been counting their “stock” in recent weeks, but to unhappy animals forced to spend their lives in captivity, this audit is more like a prisoner roll call.

Animals in zoos are denied the opportunity to fulfil even their most basic instincts. Every single decision, including when to eat, what to eat, who to mate with, and when to sleep, is made for them. Some are forced to perform tricks day after day, while others are kept in enclosures far too small for them. Stories abound of … Read more.

Dave Navarro Rocks the Cruelty-Free Look

Appearing naked, with bleeding eyes, musician Dave Navarro’s new PETA ad is pretty dark, even for someone known for his edgy sense of style.

He might look a bit gory here, but by lending his face to PETA’s campaign against animal testing, the Jane’s Addiction guitarist is actually showing his compassionate side once more.

Navarro was appalled to learn about the hundreds of thousands of animals worldwide who are poisoned, blinded and killed each year in tests for the cosmetics industry. “They’re not taking a bunny rabbit and putting mascara on … Read more.

Infographic: ‘The Hobbit’ – Unexpected Cruelty

Whistleblowers report that as many as 27 animals died preventable deaths during production of The Hobbit. Five horses, 12 chickens, a pony and several goats and sheep were reportedly maimed or killed.

Instead of coming clean and vowing to prevent similar tragedies by improving animal treatment on set or, better yet, not using animals in future films at all, Peter Jackson, his fellow producers and production giants Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema made statements that chose to avoid and deny some of the allegations.

Maybe they don’t understand how serious … Read more.

Stone speaks out against army cruelty to animalsOliver Stone is disgusted by the UK military’s use of live pigs as targets in training drills – and he’s not afraid to speak his mind.

“As a U.S. Army combat veteran, I was horrified to learn from my friends at PETA U.K. that the Ministry of Defence has been shipping British military personnel to Denmark to watch live pigs be shot and mutilated on firing ranges and kept alive for several agonizing hours before finally being killed in cruel trauma training exercises”, the Oscar-winning director, screenwriter and producer wrote this weekRead more.

Award-Winning Actor James Cromwell Warns Against Violence

As Farmer Hoggett in the film Babe, he made his living from abusing animals, but in real life, actor James Cromwell is committed to helping animals. That’s why Cromwell has teamed up with PETA for a new video public service announcement that warns everyone to look out for people who hurt animals before they move on to hurting other humans.

“People who commit violent acts often start out by hurting animals”, explains Cromwell in the video. “If you know of someone who’s abusing or neglecting an animal, don’t ignore it or just … Read more.

Fortnum & Mason Is Unfit to Hold Royal Warrants

PETA has been campaigning hard recently asking Fortnum & Mason to join shops like Selfridges and Harvey Nichols by ending its support of the barbaric foie gras trade.

Despite a shocking undercover investigation of several farms represented by the Sarlat Perigord cooperative, from which Fortnum & Mason’s distributor sources foie gras, that revealed the horrific suffering of birds, Fortnum & Mason continues to sell the vile product.

As a store which trades on its English heritage, Fortnum & Mason should not be supporting a product so cruel that its production is illegal … Read more.

PETA Activists Help Fight for Mali’s Freedom

Today, some of our fantastic activists gathered outside the Philippines Embassy to urge the ambassador to take action and help free Mali the elephant from her life of suffering.

Mali is a mere shell of the magnificent individual she once was after being confined for the last 35 years to a small concrete pen. She is the only captive elephant in the Philippines, and she needs to be retired immediately. The Office of the President has issued a directive stating that Mali should be considered for transfer to a sanctuary after an … Read more.
