1,000 More Animals Per Week Used in UK Labs

Yesterday saw the publication of the government’s annual statistics on the use of animals in scientific procedures. The figures published cover 2011 and show a 3 per cent rise over the previous year and a staggering 40 per cent rise since 2000. In the 2010 coalition agreement, the government claimed it would “work to reduce” numbers of animals used in research, and this looks like another broken promise. In total, 68,000 more animals suffered this year than last – that’s more than 1,000 animals every week – yet the Home Office still … Read more.

Animals Skinned Alive for UGG-Style Boots

Hard to imagine that footwear involving the mutilation of millions of sheep could get any ugglier, but now tests conducted on knock-off UGG-style boots labelled as “Australian sheepskin” reveal that they were actually made of raccoon dog fur, most likely from animals confined to barbaric Chinese fur farms.

Please make a donation to support our work to help all animals.

Raccoon dogs are confined to row upon row of tiny wire cages that are exposed to the elements. Many of the animals go insane from the intensive confinement. Undercover video Read more.

Almost 100 ‘Dogs’ and ‘Cats’ Line Up to Plead for Protection in Laboratories

Looks pretty good, doesn’t it? Almost 100 PETA supporters took part in an eye-catching photo opportunity at Marble Arch in London today to demand that the government not adopt lower standards of protection for animals in laboratories when it incorporates the EU’s new directive regulating animal experiments later this year. If the government adopts the directive without changes, all animals will be affected. But dogs and cats in particular would become far more likely to be used in experiments because they would lose the special protections that Britain has given them for … Read more.

Amazing Animals

Animals find new ways to astonish us every day. Wouldn’t it be great if we returned the favour by astonishing them with our compassion?

  • Scientists have discovered that “sheepish” really means “brainy”.
  • Dolphins and researchers have learned to speak each other’s language. Can a Rosetta Stone course be far behind?
  • Perhaps those dolphins can help us translate a Compassionate Action Award into dolphinese for this pup-friendly pod who rescued a dog.
  • A courageous canine has proved that true friends are there when you need them most.

A Freeze Can Kill Animals, but So Can Antifreeze

© iStockPhoto.com / wwing

With subzero temperatures set to continue, people have been reaching for the antifreeze to prevent the water in their car radiators from turning into ice. But antifreeze can be deadly to animals.

Most brands of antifreeze have a sweet taste, which can be tempting to animals and even children. The main ingredient in most antifreeze brands is ethylene glycol. Animals who ingest this chemical will promptly begin to suffer from vomiting, convulsions and kidney failure. If animals don’t receive immediate veterinary care, they face a painful, … Read more.
