JM Coetzee: Bullfighting Is a Disgrace

CoetzeeAcclaimed South African writer JM Coetzee didn’t mince words this week as he dispatched a scathing letter to the Culture Committee of Spain, criticising its support for bullfighting.

The Nobel Prize winner’s rousing message urged committee members to reject a pending initiative, sparked by bullfighting aficionados, which would give bullfighting legal protection as a “cultural pastime”. Here’s an extract:

Thousands March Against Bullfighting in Alès, France

It was an impressive sight: thousands of activists, coming from all over Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and elsewhere to speak out peacefully for animals who don’t have a voice.

As bullfighters in Alès, in the south of France, were preparing to execute 18 bulls during the town’s annual Ascension Festival this weekend, compassionate people came together to protest against this cruel and archaic spectacle. United Against Bullfighting

Injured bull in the arena after being attacked by matador, SpainAll around the world, people agree – chasing, stabbing, mutilating and killing a bull isn’t very entertaining, nor does it constitute “culture”, in Spain or anywhere else. Jallikattu Is Bull****, Say PETA Activists

Led by a costumed “bull” in a wheelchair, PETA activists took to the Embassy of India today with signs that read, “Save India’s Reputation: End Jallikattu”, in English, Tamil and Hindi. They were urging the Indian government not to exempt the state of Tamil Nadu from the national ban against using bulls as performing animals. It’s Official: Bullfighting Is Banned in Catalonia

As the bells rang in the New Year, they marked a new, kinder future. The long-awaited day that both Catalans and compassionate people around the globe have been waiting for has arrived. As of yesterday, bullfighting in Catalonia is officially a thing of the past!

95 French Demonstrators Beaten, Kicked, Punched and Sprayed With Water

The following video contains scenes of violent attacks on a group of demonstrators during a peaceful sit-in to protest the torture and deaths of bulls in archaic bullfights in France on 8 October 2011.

The pro-bullfighting crowd showed the same callousness and violence towards the activists that they do towards bulls, but at no point did the protesters reciprocate with violence.

Last Bull Dies in Barcelona

Pamplona Anti Bullfighting Demonstration 2011The last bull has been stabbed to death in Barcelona now that the last scheduled bullfight has taken place in Catalonia, the Spanish region that’s widely considered to be bullfighting’s birthplace. Faced with nearly empty arenas and growing condemnation of killing bulls for “sport,” the ban on this sadistic spectacle officially goes into effect January 1, and bullfighting is on its way out elsewhere as well.

No Bull: easyJet Drops Bullfighting Promotions

After receiving letters from PETA and a PETA supporter highlighting the barbarity of bullfights and urging them to stop promoting bullfighting to British tourists visiting Spain, easyJet executives promptly took action and removed all references to bullfighting from their websites.

Carrefour Drops Bullfight Ticket Sales

Carrefour, the second largest worldwide distributor of bullfight tickets (after Wal-Mart, which own ASDA in the UK), has made the compassionate decision to drop sales of tickets to bullfighting events in France.

In a letter to PETA France, Carrefour stated that as of April 2011, sales of the tickets would cease because of a lack of consumer demand.
