Jallikattu Is Bull****, Say PETA Activists

Led by a costumed “bull” in a wheelchair, PETA activists took to the Embassy of India today with signs that read, “Save India’s Reputation: End Jallikattu”, in English, Tamil and Hindi. They were urging the Indian government not to exempt the state of Tamil Nadu from the national ban against using bulls as performing animals. Tamil Nadu currently has permission to continue jallikattu, a cruel and dangerous “sport” in which terrified bulls are kicked, punched, jumped on and dragged to the ground – and in which human participants are often injured and… Read more.

95 French Demonstrators Beaten, Kicked, Punched and Sprayed With Water

The following video contains scenes of violent attacks on a group of demonstrators during a peaceful sit-in to protest the torture and deaths of bulls in archaic bullfights in France on 8 October 2011.

The pro-bullfighting crowd showed the same callousness and violence towards the activists that they do towards bulls, but at no point did the protesters reciprocate with violence.

Here is a rundown of the events at the times they occur:

At 0:56 seconds: Half of the group unfurl banners whilst half enter the bullring to chain… Read more.

Last Bull Dies in Barcelona

Pamplona Anti Bullfighting Demonstration 2011The last bull has been stabbed to death in Barcelona now that the last scheduled bullfight has taken place in Catalonia, the Spanish region that’s widely considered to be bullfighting’s birthplace. Faced with nearly empty arenas and growing condemnation of killing bulls for “sport,” the ban on this sadistic spectacle officially goes into effect January 1, and bullfighting is on its way out elsewhere as well.

Curious tourists who purchase tickets or those who simply go along with what’s included on their travel itinerary are the only ones keeping the fights alive… Read more.

No Bull: easyJet Drops Bullfighting Promotions

After receiving letters from PETA and a PETA supporter highlighting the barbarity of bullfights and urging them to stop promoting bullfighting to British tourists visiting Spain, easyJet executives promptly took action and removed all references to bullfighting from their websites.

From the moment the bull enters the ring, he is destined to die. His death will be slow and painful, and the last moments of his life will be full of terror and confusion, played out in front of a jeering crowd. There’s nothing sporting about a bullfight – it is a… Read more.

Carrefour Drops Bullfight Ticket Sales

Carrefour, the second largest worldwide distributor of bullfight tickets (after Wal-Mart, which own ASDA in the UK), has made the compassionate decision to drop sales of tickets to bullfighting events in France.

In a letter to PETA France, Carrefour stated that as of April 2011, sales of the tickets would cease because of a lack of consumer demand.

Read the letter in French here.

Catalonia last year became the second Spanish region to ban bullfighting outright, after the Canary Islands in 1991. Various other cities and towns across Colombia, Ecuador, France, Portugal,… Read more.

Diary of a PETA Photographer – Pamplona 2011

After attending PETA’s and AnimaNaturalis‘ joint anti-bullfighting demonstration at this time last year in Pamplona, Spain, I came back vowing to do everything I could to get this deplorable blood sport banned.

To that end, I’ve been working to rally the support of thousands of compassionate people all around the world, asking them to speak out against bullfighting via our online action alert. So you can imagine my joy when – just a few weeks after the demonstration last year and following years of campaigning, demonstrations and online advocacies by animal rights groups… Read more.

Elen Rivas’ Anti-Bullfighting Ad Won’t Fly With easyJet

A new ad from PETA – in which Spanish-born celebrity Elen Rivas appears nude and “bleeding” from the banderillas stuck in her back next to the words “The Naked Truth: Bullfighting Is Cruel” – has been deemed too racy to run in Traveller, easyJet’s in-flight magazine. We’d hoped to reach British tourists with the message about boycotting bullfighting when they visit Spain, but the magazine’s publishers have ruled that although they sympathise with the cause, they cannot run the artwork because of the graphic nature of the images and the nudity involved.… Read more.

Bullfighting Gets Axed From Spanish Airwaves

The following post originally appeared in The PETA Files:

Spain’s national television network, RTVE, has announced that it is refusing to air bullfights, noting that it is inappropriate for children (and, we might add, anybody else) to see violence towards animals. Increasing opposition to bullfighting (72 per cent of Spaniards are against it, Catalonia has banned it and Ecuadoran president Rafael Correa recently called it a “spectacle of violence”) might also have something to… Read more.
