Two former Cheale Meats employees are facing prosecution for cruelty-to-animals charges following an undercover investigation by Animal Aid that exposed horrific abuse inflicted on pigs. Defra had initially refused to use the video footage to bring the perpetrators to justice, but after they were stripped of their prosecution powers, the case was able to move forward.

Barely a year after Animal Aid first released harrowing footage taken inside UK abattoirs, they have uncovered more abuse. Video footage secretly recorded at Elmkirk Ltd (Cheale Meats) makes for distressing viewing, but astonishingly, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are refusing to prosecute those responsible because the abattoir staff were not consulted about the cameras.

PETA, alongside the majority of UK animal protection organisations, has signed a joint letter to David Cameron calling for him to reverse his decision not to ban wild animals in circuses.
The letter, which can be read in full here, was sent to Mr Cameron in advance of a debate in Parliament scheduled for next Wednesday. The debate has been secured by Labour MP Rob Flello, and MPs from all parties will be in attendance to put pressure on the government to reverse the decision not to implement a ban.

A&G Barber of Purleigh in Essex, one of the abattoirs at the centre of Animal Aid’s undercover investigation, has been forced to close down following the release of shocking video footage. Among other abuses, the video shows workers improperly stunning pigs, leaving the animals to regain consciousness and experience the full horror of slaughter. After seeing the video, A&G Barber’s biggest customer, a German sausage manufacturer, cancelled its contract.
