Tribute to a Compassionate Dad
Where do most of us learn about kindness for the first time? From our mum and dad, of course. A caring parent can be the inspiration for a lifetime of compassion for the people and animals around us, which is why we decided to celebrate Father’s Day by giving an award to a progressive papa who set an inspiring example for his children.

The animals crowned as “winners” at dog shows like Crufts are more likely to be major losers – in the genetic lottery, that is. “Purebred” is a euphemism for “inbred”: in some cases, pedigrees come from a gene pool of only about 50 dogs, meaning that these unfortunate pooches are riddled with painful inherited diseases and may live for only half as long as their healthy mixed-breed cousins.

Our mission to find the most deserving mum and recognise her for her efforts to help animals has paid off! Julie Bowyer has been named PETA’s Most Compassionate Mum of 2012. Julie was nominated by her son, Chris, who summed up his submission by saying, “[M]y mum’s commitment to the well-being of all animals is second to none”.
