Tribute to a Compassionate Dad

Where do most of us learn about kindness for the first time? From our mum and dad, of course. A caring parent can be the inspiration for a lifetime of compassion for the people and animals around us, which is why we decided to celebrate Father’s Day by giving an award to a progressive papa who set an inspiring example for his children.

The first-ever recipient of PETA’s Compassionate Dad Award is 89-year-old Sidney Pledger, a World War II veteran who’s a hero for animals as well as for his country. Nominated … Read more.

Crufts – Last Year’s Top 10 So-Called ‘Winners’

Crufts Genetic FreaksThe animals crowned as “winners” at dog shows like Crufts are more likely to be major losers – in the genetic lottery, that is. “Purebred” is a euphemism for “inbred”: in some cases, pedigrees come from a gene pool of only about 50 dogs, meaning that these unfortunate pooches are riddled with painful inherited diseases and may live for only half as long as their healthy mixed-breed cousins.

What’s more, the exaggerated features that breeders and competition judges prize, such as a squashed-in face, a narrow skull or disproportionately short legs, are … Read more.

Kevin McHale of ‘Glee’ Roots for the Underdog

Kevin McHale, who plays Artie Abrams on the Channel 4 hit series Glee, understands what it’s like to be the underdog. So it isn’t hard to understand why he’s rooting for all underdogs in his new PETA ad, featuring his adopted pooch, Sophie:

Every year, hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs end up in shelters across the UK, and many are euthanised because there aren’t enough good homes for them. Countless others who never make it to a safe haven get injured or killed by vehicles, fall victim to cruel … Read more.

Camilla Adopts Adorable Stray Beth

It’s a long way from the streets of Southwest London to the manicured lawns of the Highgrove Estate, but that is where an adorable stray pup called Beth has found herself after the Duchess of Cornwall adopted her from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

PETA may not always have seen eye to eye with the Duchess, but credit where credit is due – the adoption has received worldwide media coverage and will hopefully encourage many people to open their homes to a rescued dog or cat.
