Swedish siren and former Playboy model Victoria Silvstedt was horrified when she heard that more than 300 dogs may be shipped from her home country to UK laboratories for cruel animal tests.
Upon learning about pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca’s plans to consign hundreds of beagles from their breeding facility in Örkelljunga to the torture of animal testing, Victoria immediately fired off a letter to the company’s board imploring its members to show the dogs mercy. She wrote:
Anyone who lives with a dog, as I do, knows that dogs are thinking, feeling

We’ve just sent the European Commission a huge bouquet of flowers. Why? Because we’re delighted by the fantastic news that a ban on the sale of all animal-tested cosmetics in the EU will come into effect in March of this year.
The much-needed ban has been in the pipeline for a long time, but there were fears that it might be postponed or weakened. This week, PETA UK Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi met Commissioner Tonio Borg in person and got his word that it will go ahead, meaning that, starting in March, … Read more.
With the news of a monkey allegedly launched into space, Iran is repeating the wasteful and cruel mistakes that marked the darkest days of the space race. PETA urged Dr Hamid Fazeli, head of the Iranian Space Agency, to ground the misguided mission back in 2011, pointing out that primates are no longer sent into space by the American or European space agencies.
We are appalled by photos of a visibly terrified monkey crudely strapped into a restraint device in which he was allegedly launched into space by the Iranian Space … Read more.
In 2011, we learned that animals may have been poisoned and killed in toxicity tests that should never have taken place, as part of the EU’s chemical testing programme, REACH – the largest chemical testing programme in the world.
REACH rules state that animal tests can only be conducted as a “last resort”. But in 2011, a report from the European Chemical Agency (ECHA), which is responsible for policing REACH, showed that tens of thousands of animals were used in tests that could have been avoided. Yet ECHA has taken no … Read more.
Appearing naked, with bleeding eyes, musician Dave Navarro’s new PETA ad is pretty dark, even for someone known for his edgy sense of style.
He might look a bit gory here, but by lending his face to PETA’s campaign against animal testing, the Jane’s Addiction guitarist is actually showing his compassionate side once more.
Navarro was appalled to learn about the hundreds of thousands of animals worldwide who are poisoned, blinded and killed each year in tests for the cosmetics industry. “They’re not taking a bunny rabbit and putting mascara on … Read more.
Companies that test their products on animals needn’t bother trying to ship them to Israel, because, starting New Year’s Day, the country banned the import, sale and marketing of animal-tested cosmetics, toiletries and household cleaners. Previously, in 2007, the Israeli government had banned using animals to test personal-care and household products within the country. But with the new law, which was passed in 2010 and came into effect on 1 January 2013, lawmakers have one-upped themselves, blocking products that have been tested on animals in other countries from even crossing Israel’s border.… Read more.
Animals in UK laboratories lead lives filled with fear and suffering, but last year, it looked like even the meagre legal protection that they currently have was under threat.
When PETA found out that animal testing legislation in the UK was going to change to incorporate an EU directive, we were worried that this could end up weakening regulations and make the situation for the victims of animal tests even worse. But after thousands of you responded to the public consultation and contacted the minister and after a year of pressuring … Read more.
In a landmark move, 70 beagles who were imported from China by Advinus Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical laboratory in Bangalore, are being released to People For Animals and Blue Cross Chennai following rigorous campaigning for their release by PETA India and these groups. The dogs have been removed from quarantine and handed over to animal protection groups with the permission of the Ministry of Environment & Forests and through efforts made internally in government by MP Maneka Gandhi.
The rescue was approved after PETA India notified the Committee for the Purpose of Control … Read more.
A spokesperson for EU Commissioner Tonio Borg just sent us a letter today confirming that Mr Borg will not propose any delay or compromise on the cosmetics marketing ban due in March 2013, which would end the sale of all cosmetics and toiletries containing ingredients tested on animals. Actually testing cosmetics on animals is already outlawed in the EU, but starting at the end of March, companies that test elsewhere won’t be able to sell their products here either. Not only does banning testing save hundreds of thousands of animals from cruel … Read more.
Gideon Raff, creator and executive producer of hit Channel 4 series Homeland, knows that you don’t need to shoot, stab or dismember animals to produce one of the most capable fighting forces in the world. Having served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces before creating the hit TV series, he has firsthand experience.
After reading PETA’s exposé about the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) participation in deadly animal-based trauma-training exercises overseas that would be illegal here in the UK, Gideon penned a letter to Secretary of State for Defence Philip … Read more.
