We Have the Right to Know – Help Scrap Section 24

SECRECY copy

Right now, animal tests in Britain are hidden behind a veil of secrecy. There’s a law that actually makes it illegal to share with the public what is being done to animals in laboratories – even though taxpayers’ money may be funding the experiments.

Now, at last, we have the chance to get rid of that law – Section 24 of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.

The UK government launched a public consultation to scrap Section 24, which has now closed. Thanks to everyone who responded to the consultation and asked Read more.

Peter Gabriel: Don’t Shock, Poison or Kill the Monkey

Rock-and-roll icon Peter Gabriel has just taken time out from his European tour to sound off about an issue that is completely inexcusable – Air France’s involvement in trafficking primates for animal testing. In a letter that he sent to Air France CEO Alexandre de Juniac, the “Sledgehammer” singer points out that Air France is the only airline that still transports monkeys to laboratories where they are caged, experimented on and killed. He wrote the following:

Before arriving at their final destination, these intelligent, sensitive primates are torn from their homes and

JaneGlobally renowned primatologist Dr Jane Goodall certainly knows a thing or two about monkeys – since the 1960s, she has been conducting groundbreaking research into the lives of chimpanzees and other primates. So she speaks with authority when she describes the suffering of the animals who are shipped by Air France to laboratories.

In an e-mail to Alexandre de Juniac, the chair and chief executive of Air France, she explains:

You may not know this, but in the wild, long-tailed monkeys—the species Air France most commonly ships to laboratories—live in warm rain

Animal Testing ‘Secrecy Clause’ Section 24 Could Be Scrapped

Section 24 animal testing consultation launchedA step in the right direction! The UK government has just launched a public consultation to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding animal testing.

Section 24 of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 not only makes it illegal for information about animal experiments to enter the public domain, providing animal experimenters with a cloak of secrecy to hide behind, but also leads to wasteful, poorly conducted studies which delay medical progress and actually endanger human lives.

Every day, 11,000 animals are subjected to abuse and suffering in British laboratories that would … Read more.

James Cromwell and Justin Bieber Agree That Air France Sucks

The word has been spreading far and wide about Air France’s notorious cruelty, as it’s the only major airline that still ships monkeys for animal testing. And last week, the campaign got a notable new supporter – Justin Bieber!

The Canadian pop star encountered a group of protesters at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and after learning how primates are snatched from their homes in the wild, crammed into crates and flown to laboratories all over the world on Air France planes, he rightly concluded, “Air France sucks”. Sickening Revelations: Army Admits to Blowing Up Live Pigs at Secret Base in Wiltshire

Following Freedom of Information requests, it emerged today that the British Army conducts deadly, violent tests on live animals at its secret Porton Down military base in Wiltshire. In three years, 115 pigs were blasted with explosives in terrifying experiments to determine whether they could be saved after being subjected to “severe battlefield trauma” and to evaluate blood-clotting products.

This shocking revelation follows PETA’s release of exclusive photos showing pigs tied to a wooden frame and shot with rifles and handguns in cruel military training drills held in Denmark and callously known … Read more.

Will NATO Say No to Live-Animal Trauma Training?

Pigs ShotA promising development: the small handful of NATO countries (Canada, Denmark, Norway, the UK and the US) that continue to shoot, stab, mutilate and dismember live animals for archaic military training drills might be reconsidering their policies.

An initiative has been launched through NATO to evaluate simulation technology in order to replace the use of animals. As the NATO website says, the crude practice of live animal trauma training “has come under significant scrutiny … [and] will have to be severely curtailed if not completely eliminated”.

That “scrutiny” includes vocal opposition … Read more.

Gutsy US Congressman Takes On the Animal Testing Industry

Congressman Jim Moran proposes anti-vivisection bill in the USAA groundbreaking new bill could bring about an end to tests on animals for cosmetics products in the US!

Compassionate Congressman Jim Moran of Virginia has introduced the Humane Cosmetics Act, which, if passed, would make it illegal to conduct tests on animals for cosmetics in the US and to sell cosmetic products that have been tested on animals.

This would be huge. The US market is enormous and influential, so banning these cruel and archaic tests would save countless rabbits, mice, guinea pigs and other animals from having chemicals rubbed on … Read more.

Inside Experimenters’ Monkey ‘Factory Farm’

Thousands of monkeys are imported to the UK for experiments each year. But where do they come from, and how do they end up in British laboratories?

A recent undercover investigation by the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) has shed new light on the abhorrent primate trade. The graphic images from its exposé of a breeding facility in Mauritius – one of the biggest suppliers of laboratory monkeys in the world – tell a sickening story of routine abuse inflicted on monkeys, many of whom were snatched from the wild.
