From the same Oscar-winning team behind Man on Wire, Project Nim is a documentary about the unsettling life of tragic chimpanzee hero Nim Chimpsky. The film details his life, from being placed as a baby with a human family by Columbia professor Herbert Terrace to learning sign language and displaying proof of cross-species conversations to being shuffled around between many organisations and animal research laboratories as an adult.

We have three pairs of tickets to Project Nim up for grabs at a… Read more.

PETA Urges Met Police to Install Safeguards Against Hot Dog Deaths

Following the recent tragic deaths of Chay and Milly, the police dogs who died after being left in a hot vehicle on 26 June, we sent an urgent letter to Sir Paul Stephenson, Commissioner at New Scotland Yard, requesting that an independently powered temperature-monitoring and heat-alert system be installed in all dog-carrying police vehicles.

In our letter, we pointed out that by installing the device – which, depending on the model, can sound an alarm, page the officer, attempt to start the engine, roll down a window or pop open the door… Read more.

Activist ‘Bunnies’ Slam Applications for Cruel and Archaic Rabbit Farms

Carrying signs that read, “Everybunny Say NO to Factory Farms”, our giant costumed “rabbits” gathered outside the Rushcliffe Borough Council office yesterday to protest against applications for two rabbit farms in Granby and East Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.

Modern factory farms are designed to produce as much meat as quickly and cheaply as possible and in the least amount of space. The proposed farms would each house up to 1,100 rabbits who would be kept in wire cages stacked three high inside windowless barns. This unnatural environment – which provides no fresh air or… Read more.

Moby Talks Animals in Brand-New PETA Video

Grammy and Brit Award nominee Moby isn’t just releasing his new album and photo book, Destroyed, this week – he’s also the star of a new PETA video. In the video, recorded in Berlin by our German affiliate, the entrepreneur, author and activist opens up about his new album and, of course, about his experience as an advocate for animals.

“Industrial animal production destroys everything it touches”, explains Moby. “It destroys the animals, it destroys the workers, it destroys the communities, and it destroys the people who consume the animal products. No… Read more.

In Memory of Joanne Pullan – Our Dear Friend

Joanne Pullan passed away suddenly on 20 April 2011. She had worked for PETA for almost five years as a Manager of Major Gifts. In her passing we have lost a true and loyal friend; a hard-working, committed, funny and outgoing colleague and office-mate; a compassionate champion for all living beings and a tireless fighter against cruelty to animals.

Jo always opened up her home to animals in need. For many years she shared her home and life with Claude, a lively little dog who sometimes joined her in the PETA office… Read more.

Sir Terry Pratchett Is a Hero to Animals

Renowned Discworld novelist Sir Terry Pratchett now has another honour to add to his long list of accolades: PETA’s Hero to Animals Award. PETA gave Sir Terry the award after learning that the best-selling author had pledged a £10,000 reward to help find the person who killed 31 swans in Somerset.

Sir Terry was outraged by what he called the “wanton destruction of a living creature”. He added, “People who do this sort of thing to an animal are probably a danger to people as well”. He’s right: people who abuse… Read more.

Why There Aren’t Nightclubs for Birds

Most birds love a sweet little tune. But they aren’t so fond of disco music blaring right next to their cages all night. At the Costa Adeje Gran Hotel in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, a group of small caged birds is being used as a decorative prop in the foyer. Every evening, the foyer turns into a nightclub, and the birds are bombarded with deafeningly loud music for several hours.

It’s easy to see how the loud noise would leave the birds sleepless and upset. PETA US has written to… Read more.

PETA Germany Saves 100+ Animals

Dozens of animals were rescued from a ramshackle farm in Arnsberg-Hüsten, Germany, after a whistleblower alerted PETA Germany that the animals were being kept in filthy, dilapidated sheds or were enclosed in broken wire fences—exposed to the elements, predators, and the beer-bottle-littered ground.

Upon investigation, staff members found 59 chickens, 34 rabbits, 25 ducks, and six geese, as well as the skins and heads of two dead rabbits and the carcasses of three dead and decaying animals, which were being eaten by rats. The whistleblower stated that the owner of… Read more.

German company Lohmann Tierzucht (LTZ) – the parent company of Aviagen Turkeys, Inc. – is facing cruelty-to-animals charges as a result of evidence gathered by PETA Germany. Authorities have issued warrants for alleged violations of Germany’s Animal Welfare Act (including amputating the toes and crests of millions of chickens in order to distinguish their breeds and sexes). Convictions could bring sentences of up to three years of imprisonment plus fines.

You’ll remember that PETA US’ 2008 undercover investigation of… Read more.

Animal Rights – Join the Channel 4 Debate

Development of Alternatives to Animal Testing

A couple of weeks ago, I had the interesting experience of being filmed in an all-white studio for Channel 4′s 90-second opinion programme, 4thought.tv. All this week, they’re featuring the question, “Should animals have the same rights as humans?” Good question.

If you’re not familiar with the show, it follows Channel 4 News each night and features just one person speaking into the camera on the week’s chosen subject. It doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects either – in previous weeks, the show… Read more.
