Abi Izzard - Campaigner for Animals

Abi moved to London to join PETA in May 2010 after volunteering at PETA demos for several years and working as an intern. After many years as a vegetarian, she made the decision to go vegan after attending her first naked PETA demo in Pamplona and has never looked back.

Abi is hard-working and absolutely dedicated to her work at PETA, but she also has a wicked sense of humour (and a penchant for sarcasm!). She is always up for anything PETA throws her way – including making a dress out of 40 heads of lettuce!

Her campaign work focuses on promoting a vegan lifestyle and speaking out against the cruelty of foie gras. She organises a variety of eye-catching demos and is always seeking new ways to save animals by spreading PETA's message. Her passion and her love of animals drive her to let the world know about the horrific abuse happening every day.

Abi loves the London lifestyle and the opportunities it presents for networking with other vegans and animal rights activists – as well as the choice of good places to eat. She likes seeing new places; she recently travelled to Egypt, and she also spent a month volunteering in a Moldovan orphanage. Abi loves meeting new people, listening to live music and watching Parkour (free running) – although she would never attempt it herself … perhaps!

Thousands of Birds Spared From Life of Hell

An application to extend a broiler-chicken unit in Worcestershire that we objected to has been refused. This is great news for up to 168,000 chickens who would have been forced into a life of pain and suffering had the plans been approved.

While we celebrate this great victory, we won’t stop fighting until all chickens raised for their flesh – crammed together into huge, dark, filthy ammonia-laden sheds and forced to grow so large so quickly that they become crippled… Read more.

Army of 007s Protest Fortnum & Mason’s Foie Gras Cruelty

An army of PETA supporters wearing masks resembling 007 star Sir Roger Moore surrounded Fortnum & Mason with signs that read, “Boycott Fortnum & Mason”, in English, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish. Prompted by Moore, PETA’s primary advocate for ending sales of foie gras, the look-alikes encouraged would-be shoppers to skip Fortnum & Mason – which continues to sell foie gras, a product so cruel that its production is illegal in the UK – in favour of Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, both of which no longer put the product… Read more.

We’ll (Never) Meet Again Unless You Drop Foie Gras

Beloved by British troops for her outdoor concerts during World War II, Dame Vera Lynn now has a whole new flock of fans after penning a letter to Beverley Aspinall, managing director of Fortnum & Mason, asking her to stop the sale of the vile food product foie gras in the store. In the letter, Dame Vera – who has long expressed her affinity for birds in lyrics such as those in the songs “(There’ll Be Bluebirds Over) The… Read more.

PETA’s ‘Pig’ and ‘Cow’ Join the 99 per Cent

Last week, PETA’s loveable “pig” and “cow” joined the protesters at St Paul’s Cathedral. They were there to let people know that while a relatively small number of people fatten their wallets in the meat, egg and dairy industries, billions of animals suffer and die.

Because of corporate greed, animals are being treated like parts on an assembly line rather than the intelligent, sensitive individuals they are. Anyone opposed to injustice or morally bankrupt operations by big business should condemn industrialised animal agriculture, which causes animal suffering on a colossal scale.

More Rabbits Spared From a Life of Suffering

We’re hopping up and down in the PETA office following the news that T&S Nurseries’ plans to build a rabbit-breeding farm in Stamford have been thwarted again! After initial plans were refused, another application was submitted and promptly shot down, saving more bunnies from a life of misery and suffering.

This farm would have been a wholly unnatural environment for these quiet, clean, sociable animals and would have denied them the opportunity to do anything that makes life worth living – before they… Read more.

Victory: Foie Gras Just Isn’t Cricket!

It’s been a great summer for England’s cricket fans, with the team currently the ICC Twenty20 champion, the holders of the Ashes and the top-ranked test side in the world. But birds also have something to celebrate because the world-famous home of English cricket, Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, has removed foie gras from its menu!

After viewing PETA’s foie gras exposé narrated by Kate Winslet, which shows how ducks and geese are abused by being repeatedly force-fed in order to produce this… Read more.

Miss Earth Contestant: The Best Way to Go Green Is to Go Vegetarian

Wearing a bikini made of lettuce leaves – complemented by a diamante crown – and holding a sign that reads, “Save the Earth: Go Veg”, Miss Earth contestant Maragarita Nazarenko joined PETA outside the largest meat market in the UK today to tell passers-by that the best thing that we can do to protect the environment is to stop eating animals.

“I’ve always been concerned about the health of the planet and my own health, so going vegetarian is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” says Nazarenko, who is… Read more.

‘Fat Tax’ Starts This Autumn

© iStockPhoto / jcphoto

Have Denmark’s legislators been reading Animal Writes? PETA has long maintained that a tax on meat would help offset its negative impact on our health and the environment, and now it seems that the Danish government agrees with us. Starting in October, the country will levy taxes on certain meat and dairy products, animal fats, and other unhealthy foods.

The tariff will, of course, generate revenue for Denmark, but it is expected to cut healthcare costs as well if people respond by consuming… Read more.

Former ‘Playboy’ Model Proves Going Vegan Is the Formula for Success

Wearing a tight-fitting racer girl outfit and holding a sign that read, “Rev Your Engine: Go Vegan!” former Playboy model Victoria Eisermann handed out free vegan sausages from the Redwood Wholefood Company to Formula 1 racing fans at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday.
