The Scientists Who Are Determined to Stop Chemical Tests on Animals

Gilly and JuliaIt’s the largest animal testing programme in the world, but many people have never heard of it.

We’re talking about REACH – otherwise known as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals in the European Union. The law states that animals must be used in tests only as a last resort, but since it came into effect in 2007, it’s estimated that a staggering 800,000 animals have already been poisoned and killed as part of the programme, including rabbits, mice, rats, guinea pigs and fish. Millions more could be subjected to the same fate in the coming years, and worse, many could be used in cruel tests when humane non-animal alternatives exist!

Fortunately, PETA and our international affiliates have progressive scientists on the case working day and night to do everything that they can to ensure that doesn’t happen. The PETA International Science Consortium is working behind the scenes to help save animals from these painful and frightening experiments. This month, for example, two scientists working as part of the Science Consortium published an in-depth article in Chemical Watch, a major publication for chemistry industry professionals, outlining how to replace cruel tests on animals with reliable and humane non-animal methods.

REACH chemcial testing programme harms animalsFor example, instead of dripping chemicals into rabbits’ eyes or rubbing them into their sensitive skin, companies can often use in vitro (test tube) experiments or computer modelling to determine the toxicity of chemicals.

By providing the most up-to-date information about alternatives to animal testing, the Science Consortium is pushing the chemical industry forward – away from archaic and unethical experiments on sentient beings and towards a future in which new technologies are used to save both animal and human lives.

    stop this!!

  2. avatar Mandy Ollis says:

IF we able to find answers by constantly repeating old experiments like putting toxins into animals eyes we would have all the answers by now. They prove nothing.
However the motivation to keep doing these vile acts, lies in the fact that research labs make huge amounts of money.
Trigger words like ‘research’ ‘Medical’ ‘charity’ pop open the purses of the innocent masses who blindly contribute to the elite con men.
Through social media the masses are becoming increasingly wise to your games, our innocence is being lost and we want you to STOP!
We won’t tolerate your ignorance and reliance on ‘traditional’ methods of keeping your selves in gainful and lucrative employment.

STOP THIS ANIMAL ABUSE! They deserve to be protected. There are loads of alternative ways to test chemicals. How ridiculous is it to put it in eyes and on skins of animals. Of course it hurts! As if you didn’t know. STOP torturing animals. Instead of abusing them and put stuff in their eyes, open yours and look into their eyes. See the pain, the fear, the stress and the WHY??? Why are you doing this? Why are you hurting me? Why are you using me? Stop it! Start caring and start changing. Animals are not for humans to use in tests. They deserve to be protected! That is your duty as a human being!!! STOP TORTURING ANIMALS.

WHY? Why are people doing this? STOP THIS ANIMAL ABUSE! They deserve to be protected. There are loads of alternative ways to test chemicals. How ridiculous is it to put it in eyes and on skins of animals. Of course it hurts! As if you didn’t know. STOP torturing animals. Instead of abusing them and put stuff in their eyes, open yours and look into their eyes. See the pain, the fear, the stress and the WHY??? Why are you doing this? Why are you hurting me? Stop this abuse. Use all your energy to protect and safe the animals instead of hurting and abusing them. Animals deserve to be protected

  6. avatar Donna Evans says:

Animals are not ours to use and abuse !!!

    SHAME ON YOU!!!

  8. avatar sylvie van Maldergem says:

Is it necessary? I don’t think so..

  9. avatar Jeff says:

PLEASE STOP THE BARBARISM NOW AND JOIN THE CIVILISED SOCIETY.

  10. avatar Wendy Ward says:

Whilst experiments on animals continues, charities with “research” in the title will suffer as people are afraid that their contributions are helping to fund such cruel practices. Animals feel fear and pain like we do and their lives are as important to them as ours are to us.

  11. avatar Hollie says:

Animal testing needs to be ended as soon as possible , or at least let us see a dramatic drop In the numbers of animals.

If you keep providing new, improved ways of testing chemicals to them regularly and keep them continuously notified about the up to date ( non animal testing ) procedures, then we can put an end to this vile , inhumane way of testing chemicals.

  12. avatar emma says:

I always believed as we evolved and gained education and knowledge that we would also gain more empathy. The kind of people subjecting animals to the cruelty of chemical testing just confirms the belief that there is still ignorant savages walking the planet. This should not be happening in todays society.

  13. avatar L Nicoll says:

I don’t believe that the experiments used on animals will have the same results for humans. I alsobelieve its morally wrong to put animals through pain and suffering in this way and that no one has a right to treat any living creature like this. There has to be some other way of making progress.

  14. avatar john clements says:

STOP ALL CRUELTY AND ANIMAL TESTING

  15. STOP ALL CRUELTY AND ANIMAL TESTING

  16. Please stop the suffering of animals and use alternatives. There is no need to put these poor animals through this. I cannot stand to think what it must be like for them. I want it to stop. Thanks.

  17. avatar Rochelle W says:

    Over this horrible
    World!!!

    stop testing on animals

  20. avatar Sherry Richardson says:

STOP this on all animals now!!

  21. For goodness sake where is the humanity in our fellow human beings? Stop this totally needless cruelty. It is disgusting

  22. avatar susanna minacheili says:

    please stop animal testing

  23. avatar Vania TErzopoulou says:

I hope we can have a better world and learn new ways

This cruelty has to STOP NOW ! !

  26. avatar Ann Hicks says:

This is torture, it has to STOP

  27. avatar Laura says:

Disgusting! Poor creatures don’t deserve this!

  28. avatar Irina Salauyeva says:

Very happy to learn, that scientists are on a side of the victims.Thank You!!!With modern technologies no need to torture and kill the innocents – all this looks so medieval and so brutal!!!Behind animal testing just GREED..
Thank You again and again for giving me such opportunity,I will always support any movement to stop Vivisections and free the animals.. Sooner, better. To save them..They have only us.

  29. avatar elaine says:

STOP TESTING ON ANIMALS ITS JUST NOT FAIR

  30. avatar Florbela Chaves says:

    STOP THIS!

  31. avatar janet stavisky says:

Please. Explain how, with all the sophisticated. Technology available today, why for heaven,s fake are you continuing to use this barbaric cruelty? Please explain. III

  32. avatar Chrissy says:

I am astonished by the cruelty that we allow in our world what is deemed acceptable and has been tolerated ,animal testing needs to be ended.I will not buy products that have been tested on a animal,I do think that people are ignorant to the fact that it happens.

  33. avatar Audrey Kaufman says:

Well done for being anti-vivisection … It’s barbaric and archaic. A lot of the experimentation is for the cosmetic arena. We should respect all sentient beings not destroy them!

  34. avatar jannine says:

Why test on poor animals there are plenty of people will to do testing you would get better results

  35. avatar Janet Diehl says:

Testing cosmetics on animals is sick! We know that animals feel pain, have psychological as well as physical needs. They do not wear cosmetics, many normally live in family groups, & non normally live in wire cages!!! Pick on someone your own size; test on paid, consenting, willing humans.

  36. avatar Savita says:

    Please stop animal abuse.

  37. avatar Nan Newall says:

Henry Spira perhaps sums it up best with the following quote – “Their suffering is intense, widespread, expanding, systematic and socially sanctioned. And the victims are unable to organize in defense of their own interests.” Such barbarism and brutality towards animals needs to stop. Only by treating animals with respect and dignity can we hope to treat fellow humans with respect and dignity.

  38. avatar Mike Bird says:

Thanks for all you are doing.
