This Giant Goose Is Representing Birds in Epic Trafalgar Square Pillow Fight (Photos)

Today was International Pillow Fight Day – a worldwide flashmob event planned in a spirit of harmless fun. It’s unfortunate, then, that many of the very pillows used in the festivities caused immeasurable harm to the ducks and geese who had the feathers yanked out of their skin to fill them.

PETA’s giant plucked “goose” sprang (or rather, waddled) into action to give revellers in Trafalgar Square a timely reminder about the dire consequences of the down industry for birds.

Many birds used for down are live-plucked, meaning that workers painfully rip fistfuls of feathers from their bodies – sometimes so violently that they are left with gaping wounds. This may happen several times a year. Buying down can also support the unethical foie gras industry, as farmers seek to make an extra profit from the geese and ducks that they force-feed by selling their feathers.

PETA US has contacted pillow-fight organisers around the world, asking them to issue “no-down” policies – keep your fingers crossed that the London event will take the compassionate message on board in time for 2015.

Fortunately, down-free pillows are easy to come by, are incredibly comfortable and don’t cause allergies, so the next time the International Pillow Fight Day comes around, you can wallop away to your heart’s content, while letting geese and ducks keep their feathers intact!

IT is sorrowful to think that so many things that we enjoy cause so much harm and even death to animals, only the other day when purchasing a lipstick I remembered what someone told me in the RSPCA charity shop to be thoughtful and always ask if the products are tested on animals first before you buy.

I didn’t realise the cruelty involved in getting down. I feel really bad that I’ve been so ignorant to this and can’t believe how the animals are kept and treated. I will never buy anything with down and again and will tell anyone who I know may buy a down product about it.

  20. I have to wonder, if these abuses are not stopped legally, if our entire society will go down the tubes with greed and vanity as the enemy! And, of course, extinction of our wildlife will be a tragedy that we will not want to face! We must band together to save our animal friends from abuse, exploitation and death!!!

  21. avatar Linda Cook says:

This cruelty is disgusting!! With all advances in today’s society there is no need for this cruel act. Would we do such a terrible thing to a human just so we can be comfortable at night….no!! I hope the people who are doing this get what they deserve. These animal.abusers need to suffer themselves.

Thank god for world protest. If you have participated in this stupidity be chastened. If you own a down pillow burn it with respect. Honour the lost lives and lifetimes of misery that our supposed need rightly called luxury represents. Challenge the makers of down filled clothing and accessories. Address the misery of millions upon millions of birds who die but only after horror fear, despair. Challenge the sale of down filled articles where ever you encounter them. Speak where millions of voiceless birds cannot. Expose the human greed driving the sale of their lives. End the horror these birds, in countless numbers, must endure. If you are not vegetarian consider becoming one for the sake of the sentients who pay with their lives for human self indulgence. If you are vegetarian consider becoming ethical vegetarian. Take the next step. Challenge the universal exploitation of sentient beings. We know that only animal protein supports the growth of cancerous cells. We know even if we prefer to ignore, that the flesh of animals and birds is had at a cost of terrible suffering. We know that the human use of sentient beings for food and clothing is supported by falsehoods. We do not need them. We know that ultimately we are physically sick for eating animal protein and drinking cow’s milk. If you haven’t read Dr. Collin Campbell’s The China Study do so. The China Study is a book by T. Colin Campbell and Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University. We have entered a new era of science that demonstrates compassion’s many benefits. Yet the plea, the directive, to live compassionately has been expressed since the giant of mathematical capability and commensurate humanism, Ionian Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras established the appropriateness and right mindedness of what is now called the Pythagorean diet. There have been so many great hearted people. Their pleas for common sense on our own behalf and out of compassion for the sentients with whom we share Kingdom Phylum Class fill libraries. Now the global communication network expands our consciousness to encompass the issues that ethical vegetarianism comprise..”‘Thou shalt not kill’ does not apply to murder of one’s own kind only, but to all living beings; and this Commandment was inscribed in the human breast long before it was proclaimed from Sinai.” — Leo Tolstoy. Do we need to read the entreaties of a Tolstoy or an ancient Greek philosopher? ..or should we rather visit an abattoir to see first hand the suffering that is meat? We are bound by decency to realize our capacity for kindness. Out of a desire to help these birds don’t wear down.

do not buy down feather or eat duck/geese liver!! this is so cruel!!

  30. If we would witness humans used in laboratories suffering the same fate as our fellow animals, we would be disgusted, however, when animals are suffering, it’s ok for most people. We really are a strange animal !
