6 Reasons Horses Need Your Help in the Year of the Horse

Ingird horseHappy Year of the Horse! (Today is the Chinese New Year, in case you were wondering.) The Chinese zodiac associates horses with intelligence, independence and free-spiritedness. But in 2014, many of these beautiful, sensitive animals are sadly neglected or abused in Britain and elsewhere. Here are six ways that horses are suffering right now – and how you can help them:

    1. Racing:
Horseracing kills horses all the time. In 2013 alone, at least 130 animals died on the track. When a horse slips while turning a corner or doesn’t make it over a dangerous fence, it’s not an “accident” – these misfortunes are an inevitable result of a system which values speed and money over animals’ lives. Help the horses who are abused by the racing industry by steering well clear of events such as the Grand National and Cheltenham and withholding your money from the bookmakers who profit from them.
    2. Breeding:
Thoroughbreds in the racing industry often develop debilitating medical conditions because of aggressive selective breeding that prioritises the ability to run over basic health and well-being. What’s more, because of over-breeding, thousands of horses in the UK are abandoned each year, causing, according to the RSPCA, an urgent horse homelessness crisis.
    3. Working:
Around the world, horses are worked to exhaustion, whether they’re made to drag a carriage around the frightening streets of New York or pull heavy loads in India. One practical way to help neglected working horses is by making a donation to Animal Rahat, a PETA-affiliated animal shelter in India that offers relief to these rescued animals.Spiked bit
    4. “Entertainment”:
Horses have no desire to be film stars, nor do they have a choice when they are enlisted to appear in the latest Hollywood blockbuster. During production, there is little guarantee that their welfare needs will be met, and sometimes they are injured. During the filming of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, for example, five horses were allegedly maimed or killed. Stand up for horses by avoiding films which exploit them for entertainment.
    5. Experiments:
Many people don’t realise that horses are used for animal testing. In 2012, for example, 8,482 tests were carried out on equine animals in UK laboratories. As is the case for all animals who are subjected to experiments, this is a painful, frightening and sometimes deadly experience for horses. Use your voice to help them by opposing a law that allows shady tests to go on behind closed doors.
    6. horse fenceKilling:
Thousands of horses a year in the UK – many of them thoroughbreds who have been discarded by the racing industry – are slaughtered for meat, sent to knacker’s yards or turned into dog food. Despite last year’s horsemeat scandal, the butchery still goes on, with much of the meat being exported to foreign markets. Avoid supporting an industry that kills millions of animals a year, often in grisly conditions, by cutting meat out of your diet altogether.

So sad; feels helpless most of the time… I have always refused to go to the races though its the thing to do in my “set” of friends who are not unkind people but surprisingly think I overreact. I don’t eat meat and my little girl loves horses and for her triathlon in may is going to get sponsorship for a horse sanctuary :-).

However, I’m always keen to find new ways to do better and to help…. My little girl goes horse riding- but I’m clueless to know if this is unkind???? Also I have dogs- could you tell me what brands of dog food are better????

    Thanks.

      Hi Angela,

      re your dog food query:
I can recommend James Wellbeloved Lamb and Rice Kibble. It may seem expensive until you realise how little is needed to keep a dog in excellent condition. It has no additives of any kind and as a result often helps clear up skin conditions in dogs caused or made worse by some other foods. It was recommended to me nearly 20 years ago and I honestly believe it to be as good or better than any other dog food on the market. It is available online as well as in pet superstores.

The use and exploitation of any animal is disgraceful and hateful. These animals do not belong to you, they belong to the earth, born free. Let them be free. You are hateful in you uses of them. To all the smiling people who “LOVE” horses, from the stupid Queen of England down to the hateful men who make them pull their loads around on tarred roads – you love nothing but yourselves, the money you can make and the GLORY which you think winning races is giving you. RUBBISH, the horse is winning the race. You are lost to humanity. HATEFUL PEOPLE!!!!

  10. avatar Marie Newman says:

Like all animals the horse has a right to be treated with respect an great care If you. Ant do that stay away from them altogether but abuse is not go. E allowed in any form for any reason.

  15. avatar LINDA BADHAM says:

I AM SO SICK TO DEATH OF THE CRUELTY TO ANIMALS THAT IS ALLOWED IN THIS WORLD. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW IT IS HAPPENING ALL OVER THE WORLD AND THE GOVERNMENTS KNOW THIS AND ALLOW IT. IT IS BEYOND ME IT REALLY IS . ALL ANIMALS DESERVE TO BE CARED FOR AND PROTECTED . THEY ARE SUFFERING AND BEING TORTURED EVERY DAY AND BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO VOICE THEY DON’T COUNT IT SEEMS. WELL ITS ABOUT TIME THINGS CHANGED FOR THEM. THEY DO COUNT, THIS IS THEIR WORLD TO LIVE IN AS MUCH AS THE HUMAN. THEY BREATHE THEY FEEL THEY SENSE THEY LOVE. NO DIFFERENT TO US AT ALL. EVOLVE WORLD AND BE KIND TO OUR BEAUTIFUL CREATURES !!

  16. avatar jemnnifer dow says:

The cruelty metered out to animals large and small in every country in this world makes me feel physically sick. How anyone can mistreat another living creatue and submit them to such dreadful misery and pain is beyond my comprehension. I know many people with horses and although they say they care for them when the pony is out grow or the horse not coming up to standard they sell them. If i could afford to own a horse it would stay with me to the end of its life like my other pets. We must never give up this fight against animal cruelty.

  17. Abused and Used animals who cannot speak for themselves we are their voice so shout out loud stand up for them against the pure evil who are out their.

  18. avatar Norma Angove says:

EVERYONE SHOULD RESPECT ANIMALS – THEY ARE SENTIENT BEINGS THE SAME AS OURSELVES + FEEL THE SAME HURT-THEY RESPOND TO HUMAN KINDNESS – “NOT EVERYONE IS IN A POSITION TO HELP ANIMALS – BUT EVERYONE IS IN A POSITION NOT TO HURT THEM” THERE SHOULD BE STRICT LAWS FOR THE TREATMENT OF HORSES- WHO DON’T HAVE THE SAME PROTECTION AS OTHER ANIMALS – BUT THEY NEED SPECIAL CARE BECAUSE OF THEIR EATING AND DIGESTION NEEDS – DIFFERENT FROM OTHER ANIMALS. THEY ARE VERY SPECIAL & NEED LOOKING AFTER PROPERLY
