Announcing PETA’s Person of the Year – Ricky Gervais!

Comedian wins PETA awardRicky Gervais already has his fair share of gongs  – BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Emmys, to mention just a few – but now he has a new accolade to boast about. The outspoken comedian has just been named PETA’s Person of the Year for 2013, thanks to the way that he uses his influence and wit to defend animals day after day. He’s joining an illustrious list of British celebs who have been recognised by PETA, including Brian May and Morrissey.

When he’s not making fans laugh in shows such as Derek and The Office or sharing pictures of his beloved companion cat, Ollie, Ricky is often to be found on Twitter, letting his 5.3 million followers know how important animals are and slamming anyone who neglects or abuses them. He’s always entertaining, but it’s a sign of his calibre as a comedian that he doesn’t go for cheap laughs – with Ricky, animals are never the butt of the joke.

He has also teamed up with PETA on numerous occasions, from speaking out against the cruelty of foie gras to narrating one of our most-viewed ads of all time, alongside rocker Pink:

As proof (as if any further were needed) of Ricky’s passion for animals, here are a few of our favourite quotes from him:

  • “Animals are not here for us to do as we please with. We are not their superiors, we are their equals. We are their family. Be kind to them.”
  • “If you could bottle ‘happy dog’ it would cure everything. I love it when their whole body wags. Magical.”
  • “Freedom of speech, rationality, truth and honesty. This is my religion. Oh, and cats. & dogs. All animals. Some people. Alcohol is good too.”
  • “When xmas shopping please don’t buy into cruelty. No real fur, no foie gras, & don’t give anyone a Cliff Richard calendar. That’s just nasty”
  • “Mmmm..pistachios…my little vegan clams.”
  • “I reckon Zombies are grumpy all the time because they only eat red meat. They must be constipated for eternity.”
  • “Most people I’ve met who weren’t kind to animals weren’t kind to people either. Kindness is kindness. Simple as that.”
  • “As much as I love seeing heartless morons gored to death, I can’t take the risk of 1 innocent animal being hurt for fun. #banbullfighting”
  • “Whether you believe in evolution or magic, be nice to animals :)”
  • “How can anyone abandon a beautifully loyal dog? It’s not an accessory. It’s your best fucking friend. It makes me so sad & angry.”
  • “Dear intelligent people of the world, don’t get shampoo in your eyes. It really stings. There. Done. Now fucking stop torturing animals.”

  1. I would be honored to be a part of helping animals

  2. I love all animals and it makes me sick to see how they’re treated!

  3. I find it dreadful that people can do such terrible things to our precious animals and believe that they can get away with it. No animal should be tortured, experimented on, used for their fur, eaten and many many other ghastly things that go on. We have to learn to need our animals and cherish them before they cease to exist.

Brilliant Ricky. It is about time we got this horrendous cruelty to animals out in the open and not hidden away. Hopefully the more information people get the more they will help to end cruelty to animals who help us in so many ways.

Can Ricky or any other celebrities or agencies bring any of the Chinese angora rabbits to the UK for quality rehoming for the rest of their lives. I would be willing to rehome two. I would pay to have them spayed/neutered so that they could then bond for company and settle down to a peaceful, cared for life. I currently have 6 rabbits – 4 (2 separate pairs) live outside, with their own two-tier hutches and self dug burrows. The other two are dwarf rabbits and have an inside plastic cage with plastic, cat-litter filled, toilet corner and access to a larger area of carpet covered Perspex sheets – as they would cheerfully dig through the floor! I use soft dog blankets and not woodchip to provide low mess comfort. Rabbit pellets+water+hay (raised OFF the floor)+ small amounts of apple/carrot/minimum greens)+annual innoculations+TLC = happy rabbits. It would be great if someone in PETA could respond to me about this.

      Hi Ann,

Thank you for your message. We deeply appreciate your interest in saving angora rabbits who are suffering for the fashion industry. While it saddens us not be able to save the rabbits who are currently suffering on angora farms, with your help, we can help prevent more rabbits from suffering the same miserable fate by ending the demand for angora products here in Britain.

If you have space in your home to provide a rabbit with proper and lifelong care, please visit your local animal shelter and ask for a local rabbit rescue group, as there are countless homeless rabbits already in desperate straits in our own country.

    Dear Ricky,
Your feeling for animals makes you a wonderful human being, so compassionate, genuine and an example to all humans. I agree that if people don’t care about or feel for animals they invariably don’t care about their fellow human either. Your voice of honesty is a breath of fresh air in this world of so many self adoring individuals. Animals are intelligent, loving, loyal and deserve no less right than any ” human animal”, listen to Ricky, he should be our role model. Thank you Ricky .
