Ricky Gervais and Morrissey Denounce the Lion Killer, Melissa Bachman

Looking perversely pleased with herself as she posed for a photo over the corpse of the beautiful lion she had just killed in cold blood, the hunter Melissa Bachman has sparked understandable outrage.

To quote PETA Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi:

Hunting is cruel and completely devoid of sportsmanship. It takes no courage or character to stalk and kill trapped animals. … Maybe the public backlash against her revolting photos will help Bachman realise that dressing up like a Lara Croft wannabe, slaughtering wildlife and then posing for photos does not make her a strong and powerful woman but, in fact, quite the opposite. Real strength lies in protecting those who are weaker than oneself.

Comedian Ricky Gervais also made his views known on Twitter, combining his characteristic sarcasm with a genuine sense of outrage:

Morrissey

Compassionate superstar Morrissey admitted that the disturbing photograph of Bachman next to her victim left him “tearful”, and he lashed out against anyone who regards killing animals as a “sport”, from bloodsport aficionado David Cameron to bear-shooting Sarah Palin, and also took a dig at Princess Anne for her extraordinary recommendation last week that we should all start eating horses.

Morrissey’s memorable media statement goes on to take an even wider perspective on the treatment of animals in our society. With devastating clarity, he reflects:

In lordly London, a proudly moral statue stands on Park Lane. It honors animals that “served” during the war, boldly telling us They Had No Choice.

There is no statue that states: ANIMALS IN ABATTOIRS – THEY HAVE NO CHOICE.

These stirring words are a powerful reminder that we do have a choice. We don’t need to feed on the flesh of animals, whether they were felled with a shotgun or dismembered in the slaughterhouse. We can choose to stand against bloodshed and killing: PETA.org.uk/pledge.

It makes me sick to the core. To coin a favourite quote my father always used – ‘she needs shooting’.

    • avatar louise despointes says:

that suppose woman is not one she belong to the bad men gender that have no balls to mesure themselves to wild animals bare handed, but with powerful guns, what sort of bravery is that? send those hunters to war & let see how brave they can be!

ITS AN BARBARIE, ABSURD KILLING ANY KIND OF ANIMAL!! STOP THIS BARBARIE!!!!!!!!!!!

So when will Peta denounce Mark Zuckerberg and boycott the use of Facebook after he shot a buffalo and has its head mounted as trophy in its headquarters?

  5. avatar Sandra Beck says:

Not only do animals suffer pointlessly but the people who care enough to make a life style change (Not contributing to any animal suffering) are paying the price in a daily heartache at the horrific images and stories! why do only some people feel the pain…..what have the others got missing? If scientists want to experiment, why don’t they look at the brains of murderers, hunters, poachers and their own kind!experiment

  6. avatar neon blade says:

I don’t care what their justification is. Legal or not, “needed culling” or not, “helping with their preservation” or not. Justification is not the issue. Anyone who kills these magnificent animals and then posts pictures of themselves smiling with pride next to the corpse is a seriously disturbed individual.

  7. avatar Donna Graves says:

Hunters are a waste of human skin, I wish they were all DEAD and in hell where they deserve to be.
Hopefully Ms. Bachmann will perish soon, ( maybe in a hunting accident) the world will be a much better place without her. I personally can’t wait for her to reap the karma she deserves.

    • I wholeheartedly agree with you Donna 100% That’s my wish too!!!

    • avatar B. Wayne says:

I always find it perplexing when someone tries to take the moral high ground and speak out against these horrific things, only to advocate the death of the perpetrator with a truely disgusting zeal.

She is a hateful excuse of a human being, but to wish her dead leaves you as morally bankrupt as she.

    • avatar andy says:

      well said B. Wayne

    • avatar SUE GRIFFITHS says:

There is nothing wrong with people who wish death or harm on others who take joy in hunting and ruthlessly killing animals. These animals whether big or small just want to live their lives in peace, as is their right. They want to search for food, rear their young, they certainly don’t want to offer themselves as a target for the enjoyment of jerks. Hunters and killers would do this world and the animals a great favour if they lost their lives. Who would miss them? But animals would be missed. Animals are an important part of the eco -system and are needed. Jerks are not.

  8. avatar Jeff Stewart says:

Melissa Bachman and the numerous photographs of her smiling widely as she poses with the bodies of dead animals, is deeply disturbing. After doing a bit of research on her, I understand that she grew up with hunting, and hunted with her father. Possibly she is trying to impress or compete with daddy? At any rate
I believe that her actions are indicative of a person with a diseased mind.

  9. avatar eddie says:

AMEN to that Donna Grayes….ENTIRELY agree with you……

  10. avatar Nicole says:

People have been hunting since day dot. For some the thrill of the hunt is what turns them on and for others they need to hunt to survive. The area that needs to be addressed isn’t so much “how can she keep on doing that?”, but should be more along the lines of “how is she(anyone) ALLOWED to do that?”

She like all others hunters/poachers, will continue doing this because they are allowed to. Obviously she is desensitised to the horrific nature of her actions, but will continue to do so unless there are changes in laws. I’m not sure about what kind of law allows her to do this but If she’s not allowed to do this, then why isn’t she charged? The proof is there, causing grievous bodily harm to an innocent creature (bystander) resulting in the death of that mammal.

It doesn’t need to be difficult. No poaching, no hunting. If you live off the land and can prove you need to hunt for your survival, you’re safe. But if you can afford to buy goods from a supermarket, and have no need to eat a wild animal, then guess what folks, no hunting for you. Work at an animal shelter and do something good with your life, than taking the lives of innocent creatures.

    • avatar Marie says:

In what universe are poachers ‘allowed’ to do what they do? Do you have the faintest clue what you’re talking about? In Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa, ( and probably more countries) individual rhinos have thier own armed guards to protect them against poachers. The fact that you are comparing this woman, who has in fact contributed to conservation efforts through the (no doubt exorbitant) amount of money she had to pay, to the despicable creatures who butcher rhinos for the absurd idea that thier horns have medicinal value, just shows how little you know. Do some research and get behind a valid cause.

  11. avatar Marie says:

Hunting, done legally, is an invaluable source of finance for wildlife conservation efforts in Africa that would otherwise fail. I’m not a fan of hunting for sport, but it plays an integral part of tourism. Ignorant foreigners need to get off thier high horses and learn the facts before denouncing something they know little about for the sake of naive sentimentality.

    • avatar SUE GRIFFITHS says:

Marie you talk a load of bullshit. Hunters in no way contribute to conservation. Tourists who travel for the kill are not worthy of being near these animals. What right do they have to go to countries that belong to wild animals and decimate them? Hunters repeatedly roll out the lie that they are conservationists and only kill the old, sick animals. Why then, when hunting lions do they kill the alpha males, who protect the females and cubs? It’s simply because they think the head of a male lion looks good on their wall, and gives them something to brag about to like minded morons.

  12. avatar Pamela Geier says:

She is loving every minute of this. Clearly just an ego and nothing more. Sparking such an outrage is another victory for her, as she has her face and name splashed around the internet and television even more.

I have just watched the story of tilikum the whale
i was so shocked by the story listening to ex trainers storys

  15. I’ve just viewed Melissa’s pathetic twitter feed and have never been so disgusted in my life. But that doesn’t help those poor animals. I know there is a petition going around to stop her abuse that I’ve already signed: http://www.change.org/petitions/the-government-of-the-republic-of-south-africa-deny-future-entry-to-melissa-bachman, but is there a way to put her behind bars and feed her a vegan prison diet until she rots? That would be the only justice I can think of right now…

  16. avatar Maria says:

Totally agree with Nicole, she is desensitised with killing an innocent
Animal, we can bitch and moan as much as we want but things will not change
Until the law does! Things have to change!!! We are running out of time!

  17. avatar Marie says:

South African law permits hunting, with valid licences, because without it a good 85% of wildlife reserves in the country would be forced to close due to lack of funding. Is that what you all want? If you did the tiniest bit of research, you would find out that Melissa Bachmann obtained the necessary licence and paid the requisite fee. The lion meat was donated to needy people in the area, and the money she spent was ploughed back into the game ranch. In hunting that lion she’s probably done more practical good for wildlife than any of you ever have or ever will.

    • avatar Donna Graves says:

Marie, I could not DISAGREE with you more- you are clearly either misinformed, ignorant or a complete hypocrite! I say people like me, who have NEVER killed a lion, have done ” more practical good for wildlife” than someone who KILLS wildlife. I would bet that if that beautiful lion were still alive and could speak, he would agree with me too. By the way, I have done research, and if you have a brain and THINK about it, if people would simply stop killing wildlife- we wouldn’t even NEED wildlife reserves. Perhaps YOU should get off YOUR high horse ( if someone hasn’t paid to kill it already) and use your brain. You are defending hunting, and to me that puts you in the same class as those that are doing the evil deeds. ( waste of human skin) educate yourself, and stop being a hypocrite

    • avatar Gina says:

I HAVE done research! & I have found out that 85% of people hunting in Africa’s kills ACTUALLY DON’T go to local needy families! That’s just something they want people like you to believe! People like this disgusting woman don’t do any good for wildlife. So, believe whatever you choose to believe, but this woman is a nutcase to people who actually CARE about animals!!

    • avatar SUE GRIFFITHS says:

Yet more bullshit from Marie. Start from the premise that the people issuing permits are corrupt, and not interested in keeping the animals alive, but are only interested in filling their pockets with $$$$$. If Marie did a tiniest bit of the research she is so fond of throwing in other people’s faces, she would learn that there are numerous wildlife organisations that truly contribute to the conservation of majestic animals who are after all in their own country. These organisations contribute to solving any problems without having to take a single life. What it comes down to is Melissa Bachman is an ugly person and character inside and out, and those who support her are ugly too. These are the scum this world can do without.

  18. avatar LISA KEENAN says:

PUT HER HEAD ON A WALL – SHE PLAIN SUCKS…

  19. avatar Candy says:

This woman outrages me. You simply type her name into google images and hundreds of cruel and disgusting photos are diplayed of her revolting “hobby”

  20. avatar Pamela says:

    Standing ovation for Donna Graves!

    • avatar Pamela says:

Just to clarify… I don’t wish anyone death, that will make me as bad as the hunters… But people need to understand that these reservations would not be necessarily in the first place if it were not for glory seeking hunters!

  21. avatar Anton Potgieter says:

Marie! What claptrap. Which world do you live in that thinks “needy people in the area” would eat lion flesh! You are clearly deranged.

Canned hunting enterprises do not add one thing towards conservation in fact they threaten it.

Would you like tourists people besides tax payers that are actualy funding conservation by visisting our parks to stop going to South Africa? because if conservation in South Africa gets the Bachman reputation thats what will happen. South Africa will simply become a large abbotoir clearing house. These killers are not the mainstay of tourism or conservation in South Africa they are the cancer.

  22. avatar mary says:

Instead of, canned hunting, why don’t these “caring hunters !!!” just donate the money for animal conservation instead and STOP KILLING THE ANIMALS !!!!!

  27. avatar Galen says:

“Sport” hunting is of course despicable and should be outlawed, but there are two much bigger problems…
Uncontrolled human overpopulation is the worst. Anything short of outlawing having more than 1 to 2 children is a band-aid.
Traditional Chinese medicine is the second worst. There are already laws against some of it. Proper education and stricter enforcement and penalties are badly needed.

  28. avatar June Lane says:

I so agree with everything Helen Hildebrand has written here in her comment I could not have worded this better myself, Melissa Bachman is indeed the Devils Spawn
