Bloodshed at Britain’s Universities

Disturbing animal testing figures revealed from British unisThe student newspaper The Tab has just published the disturbing finding that British universities are killing more than 1.3 million animals a year in animal testing programmes.

Monkeys, badgers, dogs, cats and pigs are among the animals being abused and killed in academic institutions up and down the country. However, mice and fish are the most frequent victims of tests, with hundreds of thousands being slaughtered a year.

In laboratories, animals are kept in bleak cages and often recoil in terror from the white-coated men and women who treat them as living test tubes. Cruel experiments conducted in universities include forcing rodents to inhale toxic diesel fumes and inflicting high levels of stress on baby animals. Once a test is over, the traumatised animals are discarded and killed.

According to The Tab‘s animal testing figures, the University of Edinburgh is the worst culprit, killing a shocking 226,341 animals a year, followed by the University of Oxford, with 202,203 victims – the equivalent of five mice killed for every single student.

It’s an absolute disgrace that the UK’s supposedly world-class higher-education institutions are still conducting these archaic and inhumane tests on animals. Results obtained from horrific animal experiments in an attempt to investigate human diseases tend not even to be relevant: according to a US Food and Drug Administration report, more than 90 per cent of drugs that pass animal tests fail in human trials. Students and academics are quite simply studying the wrong species – and at the same time, inflicting unimaginable suffering on animals and going against public opinion, social progress and 21st-century scientific pursuits.

These figures were obtained through a Freedom of Information request. But we’re denied the right to know the truth about millions of other animals killed in British laboratories because of a law that keeps this information out of the public domain – despite the fact that in some cases, our taxes are paying for these appalling tests. Please write to the government minister responsible for animal testing and ask that this secrecy clause be abolished: petauk.org/secrecy

I am against thus because it is inhumane and truly devilish to test on animals when they have no voice to speak out

  2. It is outdated that we still hurt animals to test for things we can find out other more sophisticated ways … let’s evolve.

  3. avatar Julie King says:

    Stop this hideous testing.

  4. avatar lizzie says:

i agree we should start to love and respect our animals

  5. avatar laura mitchell says:

Animal testing has to stop. Creatures are living things with feelings. Just because they cant talk or act like us this leaves them defenceless. I understand you want the best for us as human beings but there are other ways of testing products that are not on animals. This really has to stop please i beg you! Have a heart and stop this cruelty. Its unacceptable.

    Regards

These test give you your life the way it is. These animals are farmed like other millions of animals which end up on your dinner table.
but for these tests there is s degree of chance you wouldn’t be here to make any comment.
we assume there are other ways, and universities are headed by fools and they don’t have brain to prevent these tests if it was possible.
I think they are doing what best could be done.
We need to understand and think with brain not heart.

    Stop this cruelty

  7. avatar Jacqueline Byrne says:

This is barbaric and the majority of it is unnecessary …

    STOP IT NOW!

  8. avatar Sarah-Jane Akhter says:

Cruel and unforgivable, this needs to stop

  9. avatar Veronica May says:

It is wrong to test on animals, please stop this at once. They are frightened of you and they are kept in appalling conditions you have no right to make them suffer like this. Also a result of a test on an animal may not be the same conclusion on a human , so then you will of put them through all this pain and misery for nothing. i am appalled.

  10. avatar Fiona Wall says:

I can’t even imagine the pain and suffering these poor animals go through on a daily basis in their miserable short lives.I for one would and will not ever buy anything that has been tested on animals. Please check your packaging carefully on chemicals and make up products carefully and choose an alternative brand,,if we all stop buying the products that are tested on animals we’ll be helping to abolish this heinous crime against innocent animals. Criminals aren’t even subjected to these conditions so why should defenceless animals???? I am truly amazed that this is allowed to happen in this day and age.

    STOP THIS DISGUSTING BEHAVIOUR

  12. avatar Amy H says:

  13. avatar Edwina Campbell says:

Absol horrific, defenceless animals. Take all the murderers, child molesters + animal abusers + USE THEM !!!!

  14. avatar Dr Susan Muston says:

This is a disgrace and must stop

  15. avatar Dr Susan Muston says:

This is NOT ACCEPTABLE AND MUST STOP

  16. avatar Brittany says:

It truly saddens me to hear things like this. What have we turned ‘science’ into? Truly disgusting. “They’re just mice” “They’re just dogs”. They still eat breathe and sleep like we do! You never hear anyone say “They’re just humans”. These so called ‘scientists’ would never volunteer to put themselves through what they put these defenceless innocent creatures through so what right do they have?!

Cruelty does not cure diseases. The human population is an estimated 7bil why not experiment on any of those undeserving ???

  17. avatar claire says:

    Dear Anne,
If a university is not on the data file – does that mean they are not doing animal testing or that they did not reply to your info request? Curious to know where my uni (Manchester) sits on this?
    Thanks,
    Claire

    • avatar Anne says:

      Hi Claire,
The research was carried out the student newspaper, The Tab, so I’m not entirely sure about the full details I’m afraid. My understanding is that the FoI request was submitted to a total of 132 universities and research institutes, and 44 replied. The journalists may be able to give you more info on whether Manchester was one of them – here’s the full article

Im disgusted at my country, do we think animal’s have no feelings,
We our supposed to be a nation off Animal lover’s,
What has happened to us that we even think this is
Ok!!!! Very disappointed to be British!!!!

  19. avatar becky smith says:

Cruelty and disgusting, must stop and find a different means of testing

  20. avatar gaynor fisher says:

dont abuse r animals U HAVE NO RIGHT

  21. avatar Clare price says:

Absolutely disgusting! There is no need in these times for animal testing to be happening. It must be stopped!!

  22. avatar Lesley Innes says:

    Please stop animal testing

  23. avatar Jackie says:

It is totaly disgusting that all animals are used for experiments why should they suffer, they feel pain too but. cannot speak for themselves. Humans should be used for experiments like people who have hurt, tortuned and killed animals or humans. What right do these univertisties have to torture those poor helpless animals. Shame on you, you have no right!!!!

  24. avatar Sean Murphy says:

Down with this sort of thing

  25. avatar Jaki Dawson says:

This is outrageous it should not still be happening in 2013 it’s such a cruel act on an animal disgusting

  26. avatar Maggie Cranfield says:

I suffer with fibromyalgia, there is no cure and nothing can be done for me, if animal testing meant that i would possibly have a cure and be free of it, then don’t bother, i prefer to suffer rather than these poor poor animals who cannot speak…let them be free!!

  27. avatar Heather says:

Well said Maggie, I think most people would say the same thing – we all have hereditary diseases but that is OUR fate and NOT these animals. We do NOT have the right to make them suffer like this! Testing on animals does NOT give the same results as testing on humans so TEST ON HUMANS !

The scientists would have us believe that they ‘only do necessary experiments’, ‘keep pain and suffering to the minimum’,’ respect the rights and needs of the animals’ – THEY LIE ! Most experiments are repeated again and again, many animals are forced to ingest or inhale poisons and the ‘test’ is only complete when HALF of them die. Rabbits and rodents are routinely burned or injected with caustic substances, blinded by painful chemical eye tests – These tests PROVE NOTHING ! STOP making excuses and end this ANIMAL ABUSE !!!

  28. avatar Helen Davey says:

Test on prisoners who have been given life or the death sentence – they CAN tell you what ‘hurts.’
    Stop testing on animals NOW!

  29. avatar Lynn Stevens says:

    Sickening and inhumane. Please stop!

  30. avatar christine hutt says:

Animals feel pain the same as humans. Don’t TORTURE animals!!

  31. This barbaric testing on defenceless animals must stop, they have no voice, no rights and no choice…………STOP IT NOW…………..PLEASE1

  32. What have we come to , to do this to the most innocent creatures . There is NO NEED for these obscenities to continue. If something is this damaging and lethal, it has no right to be produced in the first place.

  33. avatar Jill Cuss says:

Please stop testing on animals, I’m sure we don’t need to do this anymore as we have a huge knowledge base already.

If testing is absolutely necessary then do it on willing humans and pay them (you might not find many takers though as you well know the testing is cruel and causes suffering).

  34. avatar yvonne cartmale says:

No Animals should be tested on, test on people that have hurt children and animals, Animal testing is barbaric and cruel. Stop TORTUREING ANIMALS we are in the 21st century not the 1800

  35. There is no need for the majority of these tests and their are plenty of murders out there without you joining in on these poor animals.

Thanks for shoving an awful and unexpected photograph in front of me while I’m browsing FaceBook. You won’t get many allies by using shock tactics and upsetting people with brutal pictures. Only bullies rely on causing offence and deliberate provocation. You should try campaigning in a more intelligent way. You would have far more success.

    • avatar Dan says:

      Hi Keith,

Thank you for your comment. The Facebook post you are referring to is our most successful Facebook post of the month, with more engagement than any others.

There are several reasons we include photos and footage in our posts.

First, many people simply do not want to believe the extent of animal abuse occurring in our society. The old adage about a picture being worth a thousand words is particularly true in the case of cruelty to animals.

Additionally, the photos and written materials in our posts are intended to make people inspired enough to want to act. This plays an important role in motivating people to sit down and write letters to their law makers, newspapers, or local authorities demanding an end to animal neglect and abuse. The upsetting photos of the brutal practices that you have a problem with make people angry and inspired to act and help animals.

Remember, as disturbing as it is, we only have to look at the pictures—the animals had to live it. They will have truly died in vain if they died without anyone documenting it and shouting the injustice of it to the world. The animals are counting on us to do all we can to publicize their suffering and motivate others to help them. Please do consider sharing our posts with others who need such proof.

Denial of these atrocities is as bad as the perpetrators and their deeds!

  37. avatar Elizabeth McGraw says:

No living creature deserves to be treated with such cruelty.

  38. avatar Adam says:

Of course we should minimise the number of animal experiments being done, of course we need to find alternatives, but millions of lives have been saved through treatments developed with animal testing and there is no viable alternative to date, this is not a simple issue, there is not a simple answer

  39. avatar Jeanne Boon says:

Do animals use any of the products that are being tested? NO! NO! NO! So how on earth can you justify using them ………. there are enough people serving “life” in prison who could be used in the testing programmes instead!! These laboratory tests smack of a culture I want no part of.

  40. avatar ron says:

Go to your local university now and ask is there any experiment which is important for medical research where you could use me instead of an animal stating that you will take full responsibility for anything that happens to you. NO, thought not…

  41. avatar Kamal says:

    Do we fully understand plants?
They have nervous system too, and we should not hurt plants too. They may be suffering the pain and torture as well.(That will be next generation of emotionalists)
The only rule necessary for us is that we should do whatever necessary to improve our species to the extent we can and let us not be emotional about pain of animals. We can farm animals, use them and kill them. Zillions of bacteria’s are trying to penetrate our immune system if they do we kill them (if we can). The fight of survival is everywhere in nature and these tests on animals are part of that fight to improve our survival and comfort.
There are billions of humans who are suffering everyday, and live a life full of torture, hunger and pain. I will request all those who are deeply pained by animal cruelty first focus on cruelty on humans. If you will do that you will find the pain and suffering is of billions of humans is so horrible that they life worst than animals. Let us give due respect to Universities, and scientists who are doing there difficult work and leave this issue of animal cruelty for a later date when we have eliminated human cruelty.

    • I totally disagree with you. You are selfish and want animals to die so that you can live. There is suffering of people. But who is causing the suffering? We as a species cause the wars, global warming, deforestation. We have murderers, child molesters in our midst. You want animals to suffer a terrible death to save us? Dogs and cats are boiled alive in Asia and it rarely hits the news. When there is a human tragedy it’s plastered all over. I do not think we have a right to torture any other species. It is wrong.

  42. avatar Ipsey says:

Ideally we need to find alternative to animal testing. However cosmetics testing totally unacceptable but I don’t see anyone complaining about being able to use ibuprofen, painkillers etc…
Another way would be better but our main recourse would be to test on humans if not animals.

suggest a suitable alternative for medical testing and I’m all ears

  43. These evil universities should have their funding withheld or taken away completely. You mention in your report that tests are conducted into the effects of diesel fumes. The medical profession has known for years the answer to this.Diesel is hardly a new product so this is just an excuse for university sadists to try and justify their existence and satisfy their cruel appetites.

  44. avatar KAY SAMSON says:

Animals are not able to stand up for themselves or speak out so will always suffer in the world we live in because some people are not able to show compassion, or love to an animal. Instead they do not or will not care if, and when they suffer pain and people like this do not deserve to be in my thoughts, they disgust me. END OF STORY.

  45. avatar ALI MURPHY says:

    STOP THIS!!!

  46. These animal tests are wrong and immoral! The animals live in horrific conditions and are terrorised until the day they draw their last breath.
Furthermore, numerous studies show that results obtained by testing on animals cannot be transferred to humans and alternative methods have now been developed.
Until this mass abuse of our fellow animals stops, I will continue to be ashamed being human

  47. avatar kay says:

I strongly believe animal testing hardly solves any problems. Lots of drugs tested on animals that then get given to humans normally don’t work because our DNA is very different to animals. Plus the poor animals have no voice. They must suffer a huge amount which in my eyes is very cruel, barbaric and evil. My heart breaks for them animals who are innocent victims of such abuse. It’s about time scientists found an alternative to animal testing. We are not living in the dark ages. Now remember that and stop to consider what these animals are going through. God bless the poor innocent animals.

  48. avatar Mi N says:

    Don’t need animal experiments
    Because there is an alternative
Animals Are Not Ours to Abuse in Any Way!
Slaughter should be given severe punishment .
    Abuser be cursed
The deed comes back upon the doer!! Certainly
    GOD IS WATCHED
