Putting the ‘Brakes’ on UK Foie Gras Sales

Happy GeeseBrakes Group UK, one of the UK’s leading foodservice providers, has confirmed to PETA that it will no longer offer foie gras on its menus.

Since learning from PETA of the inhumane treatment of ducks and geese raised and killed for foie gras, the company made its position clear by promising to discontinue the vile foodstuff.

Fortnum & Mason CEO Ewan Venters might note that his former employers, Sainsbury’s and Selfridges and now Brakes, have all rejected foie gras sales, while Fortnum & Mason is shamefully still selling this “torture in a tin”.

Foie gras production is banned in the UK and 16 other countries. We are happy that yet another company in the UK has recognised that selling it contributes to immeasurable suffering for geese and ducks.

Metal pipes are forced down birds’ throats, and huge amounts of grain and fat are pumped into their stomachs several times a day to make foie gras. The birds’ livers become diseased as they swell to up to 10 times their normal size, and the pipes often puncture the birds’ throats – frequently causing them to bleed to death during the process.

Brakes will receive a certificate and a letter of appreciation from PETA thanking the company for doing the compassionate thing and ceasing to promote this foul industry. The public outcry against unethical foie gras is persuading more and more companies to stop selling it, but unfortunately, a few stores are less progressive.

Please write to Fortnum & Mason, and urge the company to end its support of the foie gras industry.

  6. […] Today, a valiant PETA supporter volunteered to kneel outside Fortnum & Mason’s Piccadilly store and be “force-fed” through a tube to represent what animals on foie gras farms endure. They are fed and fed and fed until they become sick, with their livers swelling to up to 10 times their natural size. After the birds are killed, the diseased organs are turned into a vile fatty pâté and sold by stores such as Fortnum & Mason – although most other companies in the UK refuse to stock it. […]
