Your Voice Counts! Hotel Ditches Foie Gras After E-Mail From PETA Supporter

As consumers, we have the power to change the world. We can vote with our wallets and make sure that our shopping habits reflect our compassionate principles. And we can also make our voices heard: most companies really care what you think and will often respond positively to feedback, as this fantastic story from PETA supporter Emma Thompson shows.

Emma was enjoying a relaxing spa day at Gloucestershire’s Wyck Hill House Hotel when she made a disturbing discovery – foie gras was on the restaurant menu. As someone who cares about animals, she was immensely disappointed to find out that the hotel was selling a foodstuff made by torturing birds. So she decided to write to the company’s management, politely letting it know that she would not be visiting the hotel again unless it ditched the vile product.

A few days later, she received an e-mail back from the general manager promising that foie gras would be taken off the menu! He wrote:

My chef has over the recent weeks been working on new menus which will be available to view on our website shortly and I am very pleased to say, they do not use Foie Gras and this will remain the case for the future.

Well done, Emma, for speaking up for animals. And thanks very much to Wyck Hill House Hotel for listening! As Emma says, “It just goes to show what can be achieved with some polite but to-the-point feedback – we’re all in this together!”

We hope you’re as inspired as we are by Emma’s achievement. If you spot a restaurant, hotel or shop that still sells foie gras, please follow her example and send the business a polite e-mail asking it to stop supporting cruelty.

Do let us know when you’ve contacted a company – we’d love to hear how you get on!

Never any Fortnum’s for me.Foie gras is wholly repugnant to me.I wonder how many people DON’T go to these places because they serve it.
