Fortnum & Mason: Giving Two Fingers to British Animal Welfare Laws

Black Sabbath bassist Terence “Geezer” Butler called on his fans to boycott Fortnum & Mason since it shamefully clings to sales of foie gras – a product so vile that it is illegal to produce in the UK and is banned from Royal menus. The rock-‘n’-roll legend has also written to Fortnum’s chief executive, Ewan Venters, urging him to remove the controversial product from the store’s shelves.

“I’ve been a musician for most of my life, and I’m not afraid to make some noise, especially when it comes to issues of cruelty to animals”, says Butler. “I’ll therefore be urging my family, friends and fans to stay away from Fortnum’s … until you stop selling that vile foie gras.” Butler also asks Fortnum’s boss, “[D]o you really want to give two fingers to British animal welfare laws by being one of the only remaining retailers to sell this ‘torture in a tin’?”

Geezer’s scathing criticism comes after PETA showed him undercover video footage, narrated by acting legend Sir Roger Moore, which exposes terrible abuse on foie gras farms supplying Fortnum & Mason – including at the abattoir, where birds had knives plunged into their throats without prior pre-stunning, in apparent contravention of both UK and French law.

During foie gras production, huge amounts of grain are pumped into the stomachs of geese through metal pipes, which are rammed down their throats several times a day. Their distended livers – which can swell to up to 10 times their normal size – press against their lungs, causing them to pant constantly. Veterinarians and avian experts agree that there is no humane way to produce foie gras. Animal protection groups – including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Compassion in World Farming, Animal Defenders International, Animal Aid, Viva!, Four Paws, One Kind, Save Me and the International Veterinary Society – have all joined PETA in calling on Fortnum & Mason to stop selling foie gras. Please help by sending a message to Fortnum & Mason and boycotting the shop.

  15. avatar Sean Ashley says:

I have complained to Fortnums, several times about them selling foie gras, I think they must have lost a lot of customers because of their unethical behaviour.

  16. avatar isobel ewing says:

there is no need for this cruel act

  17. avatar Brien Comerford says:

Many people are unaware that Terry “Geezer” Butler has been an animal loving vegan for over thirty years. He abhors all forms of cruelty to animals.

  18. This act of cruelty is to satisfy someones palate,it is not acceptable. To sell it is as bad as force feeding those poor birds. They should be ashamed of themselves.

  19. avatar Alix Freeman says:

Stop this cruelty now….no-one is going to die of starvation if you stop selling this product…what you are doing is barbaric…needless…and by selling this product you are equally as guilty as the people who carry out this vile act.

  20. This has got to stop. It all is about human beings greed.

  21. avatar Lara Phillips says:

This is disgusting!! How is it allowed to let animals suffer like this!!

  22. avatar lynne says:

Vile cruelty, as if humane rearing and slaughter of animals isnt enough to satisy gluttonous humans, they need them torturing before their death, so satisfy a fancy in food, vile beings. Whilst cook progs dine with encourage it as trendy and macho pathetic brainless beings who suck it up.

  23. avatar Cat says:

The rich and those who pander to them seem to have left their EI and human cred in some gutter, no matter what car these people drive, no matter how plush their homes or sparkly their jewellery, trash is trash, it is their souls that are sacrificed for material wealth. It might be a good idea for them to try force feeding themselves for a while, or perhaps they already do. Humanity means we should be humane but this requires education that some people simply have missed.

Don’t buy any products produced by or for rich people or from shops where they shop, stick to the shops that sell with loving kindness only.
