Terrified Monkey Returns From Wasteful Trip to Space – PETA Comments

With the news of a monkey allegedly launched into space, Iran is repeating the wasteful and cruel mistakes that marked the darkest days of the space race. PETA urged Dr Hamid Fazeli, head of the Iranian Space Agency, to ground the misguided mission back in 2011, pointing out that primates are no longer sent into space by the American or European space agencies.

We are appalled by photos of a visibly terrified monkey crudely strapped into a restraint device in which he was allegedly launched into space by the Iranian Space Agency. Monkeys are highly intelligent and sensitive animals who not only are traumatised by the violence and noise of a launch and landing but also suffer when caged in a laboratory before and – if they survive – after a flight.

The European Space Agency (ESA) – which represents Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK – has a very active space exploration programme and has publicly stated that it “declines any interest in monkey research and does not consider any need or use for such results”. The ESA instead employs modern technology such as the state-of-the-art simulators to assess health risks for astronauts.

NASA ended the use of primates in space radiation experiments in the early 1990s, when it determined that the results were not relevant to human astronauts. In 2010, NASA’s plans to restart the programme were cancelled after PETA and others voiced strong ethical and scientific objections to the ill-advised plan.

  4. avatar Antonella Concato says:

    WRONG. Absolutely WRONG.

  5. avatar Ann Jones says:

I don’t know why I’m posting because Iran doesn’t care what we in the West think. But if Iran thinks we are impressed that they sent a terrified monkey into space then they can think again. Thank God we stopped sending animals years ago.

  6. avatar Fran says:

    Dear Peta,

Please put pressure on the Iranian government to desist from this horrific practice.
We all have free wills, so maybe an an exemplary citizen should kindly volunteer.

Thank you for all the outstanding work you do on our behalf, for the welfare of animals.

  7. avatar Felicity Hother says:

I think this utterly pointless experiment was appalling and disgusting. Any sentient human being would understand that the creature would have been traumatised, unable to defend itself, its face completely exposed and vulnerable to some object thrust towards it – the camera – and then not understanding any of the noise and vibrations going on all around it. It makes me feel sick.
Thank you PETA for at least making your views about it known.

  8. avatar Jeanne says:

My blood boils when i look at this poor creature i hate these people for doing this

  9. avatar Sharon says:

It clearly visible that the poor animal in the picture is highly distressed and I doubt very much it would have survived the journey without having a heart attack. I cannot see what point Iran were trying to prove by sending this monkey up to space other than outraging the societies that actually care about the welfare of animals. Surely we have moved on from using animals in these experiments.

  10. avatar John Bonser says:

Iran is desperate to show that they’re a country of the 21st Century.
Instead, they prove that they’re at least 50 years behind the ‘civilised’? World by using archaic ‘technology’ in their space programme. It’s only to be expected from a culture with a mediaeval mind-set.

  11. avatar Robert George says:

Another example of the brutality of the Iranian regime. Meanwhile the West has factory farming, mega dairies, battery hens, sadistic slaughterhouses, and shooting animals for ‘sport’ , so can hardly claim the moral high ground.

  12. Absolutley appalling, how do these people sleep at night knowing what they’ve done. It makes me feel ashamed to be a human being. When will these backward countries learn to respect nature…..Lets be realistic though their human rights are appalling so animals don’t stand a chance!
Thank goodness for orgs like peta that are ever battling to change that.

  14. avatar jenna says:

    where is the monkey now?

  15. Iran’s use of monkeys in space is outdated and sends a clear picture of this country’s need to sensationalize themselves! This is animal cruelty, and the USA and most other countries are not impressed! What a shameful act of mistreatment of animals!

  16. avatar Lisa D'Ambrosio says:

    Poor monkey.

  17. Can anyone look into that poor terrified creatures eyes and tell me this is right. Shame on them and people like them who do this to poor defenceless animals. How DARE anyone treat Gods creatures in this way.
But really, what can you expect from a country that hangs gay people from cranes and boasts about it……

  18. avatar Helena Rice says:

  19. I despair of the human race, I have no understanding why people think that because animals don’t look the same as us or speak the same language it gives them the right to dominate them and use them however they please, I hope that at some point in the future we look back in disgust.

  20. avatar Joanna Dunne says:

The above photo of the monkey sent in to space is really upsetting and shocking. The monkey looks terrified. The people who have done this to the defenceless monkey and to other animals are just sadistic.

  21. avatar Loraine Herman says:

I wholeheartedly agree with all the above comments. Thank you. It depresses me so much that this and so much other depravities are continuing on a daily basis, whether it is poor little Primates put into contraptions and sent off into Space. Or the evil Fur trade where cats and so called Man’s Best Friends are SKINNED ALIVE IN CHINA
or in JAPANESE Restaurants the fish is still writhing on your plate, or the ANNUAL SEAL CUB CULL that takes place in CANADA. Or Bear Baiting in SOUTH CAROLINA USA. There seems to be NO END TO THE INFLICTING ATROSOTIES to Animals. Countries like China, Vietnam, North/South Korea and the rest of Asia STILL LOVE TO EAT CATS AND DOGS and everything else that has a PULSE. BRUTALITY ALL THE WAY. Japanese, Faroe Islanders killing Dolphins, Whales, the list goes on. Animals all around the World getting tested on in Frankenstein LABORATORY’S. THE LIST GOES ON AND ON AND ON AND ON

    • You telling me. I’m sickened to open up my computer to see what other atrocities will raise their ugly head. Hope to God that all this partitioning will some day make a difference
Why the hell do they want to send a poor monkey in to space? What f….. Difference would a tied up monkey make? The sick sick bastards

I need to get away from this cos it just DEPRESSES me SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH.

To all the poor and defenseless animals out there that have been or are being sent to loboratories, tortured, killed, poisoned, skinned alive, neglected, starved, beaten, abused, ill treated, hunted, sent to the abattoir ect ect DON’T EVER FORGET THAT THERE ARE SOME HUMAN BEINGS BY YOUR SIDE THINKING OF WHATEVER YOU HAVE SUFFERED AND WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU ALL FOREVER

  23. It barbaric and cruel. Astronaughts want to go into space for these creatures it must be a terrifying experience.

  24. avatar Rommy says:

    So so cruel!!!

It is clear that mankind has learnt so little. The Iranian people must be very proud

  27. avatar Dawn S says:

Utterly appalling. I hope those turds who are responsible burn in the flames of hell for all eternity. I too agree with all the above comments. Where do humans get off thinking they have the right to treat animals in this way? If I had my wish they would all wish they had never been born. Complete low lifes.

  31. avatar Cheryl G says:

These people are one the most mentally disturbed bunch of freaks ever. Like what is a monkey going to tell you? Is there anything civilized about this country? I’m not even going to say how I truly feel about these people but i guarantee it is far from being nice.

  32. avatar Kate says:

What a disgusting, wrong, cruel, barbaric and utterly unacceptable practice. I look forward to the time when humans realise that it is not OK to use, abuse and exploit fellow creatures in any manner.

  33. avatar F.P says:

This made me cry, i’m 13 years old, how can someone do this?

  35. avatar Mags Alexander says:

I cannot comment – it is unprintable

  36. It made me cry too, and i’m 50 years old! What a sad, sad world we live in.

  37. avatar Luke Klein says:

Who the hell does mankind think he is exploiting sentient beings in this way? We are not the most intelligent species we are the most stupid and ignorant.

  38. avatar Roy Baker says:

It is sad, very sad, but we don’t have to go all the way to Iran to find animal cruelty. Britain should put it’s own house in order before it lectures other countries.

  39. avatar Fay Lavender says:

They should send prisonsers on death row up there to gain the info they need. They are going to die anyway and it means that they are going to get human diagnosis which is what they are looking for.
Use your brains you heartless spacemen.

  40. avatar Sam Brown says:

Idiotic, barbaric and with zero scientific integrity, an extremely poor reflection on Iran. I hope they are ashamed of such a truly disgusting act.

  41. avatar Ligita Mikelsons says:

The people who sent him up there should be launched into the stratosphere, never to return to earth.

  42. avatar Jan Whiteley says:

This photo has made me feel sick. How can anyone do this. What are they trying to prove??????? Iran must not do this again.

god made all the beautiful creatures for good reasons.

i hope who did this to those poor beautiful animals will get karma. karma will take care of them.

  45. avatar blythspirit says:

It’s a disgusting photo the epitome of research on Monkeys. Considering how the Iranian Gov treat members of their public especially their women it’s no surprise they would abuse an animal, which goes to confirm that what you do to animals you do to fellow humans. I have friends who are Iranian and have suffered terribly in Iran for speaking out. Humans are animals too of course…

  46. avatar Pippa Willow says:

The misguided people who did this need to take a long hard look at themselves and hang their heads in shame. This wantin act of indifference and cruelty imposed on the monkley will without dought come back to haunt them in their darkest hour.

  47. avatar nounouche says:
