Miss Green Teen Celebrates 13th Birthday With Compassionate Kid Award

The Miss Green Teen website teems with information that makes the case for animal rights easy to understand and hard to ignore. The site is run by Maia Page-Rubio, who recently received PETA’s Compassionate Kid Award on her 13th birthday in recognition of her efforts to help animals.

Maia’s activism focuses on the cruel practice of maiming and killing animals in cosmetics testing. On her website, she writes about the issues and offers cruelty-free fashion and beauty tips.

“Young people are leading the charge for animal rights around the world, and Maia is a great example of that”, says PETA UK Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi, who notes that Maia is also vegetarian and has persuaded several of her friends to follow suit. “Her compassion for animals and her determination to create a better world for them is a wonderful example for other kids – and adults – to follow.”

You can join Maia in her activism. A complete ban on the use of animals for cosmetics testing has been in place in the European Union (EU) since 2009, but products containing ingredients tested outside the EU can still be sold within its borders. A full sales ban is scheduled to come into force throughout the EU in March 2013, but the effort to close the sales loophole is currently under threat. You can support the ban by contacting the European Commission and letting it know that you want no delay, no compromise and no cosmetics tests on animals.

Do you know any children or teens who go out of their way to help animals? Nominate them for PETA’s Compassionate Kid Award!
