Victory: Rabbit Factory Farm Plans Withdrawn!

Rabbits were spared a life of being suspended in wire cages inside windowless sheds as plans for a factory farm in South Derbyshire have been withdrawn.

PETA supporters sent more than 2,000 e-mails to South Derbyshire District Council urging it to reject the plans. The proposed farm would have housed up to 260 breeding does by the end of three years, each of whom would have been forced to produce up to 52 babies a year. The rabbits would have been individually housed in an unnatural environment which affords no fresh air or sunlight and can cause extremely painful bone disorders and foot inflammations. Stressed captive animals often resort to neurotic, self-harming behaviour.

Rabbits are sensitive social animals who, in the wild, build intricate burrow systems and have a strict hierarchy. Confining these normally gentle animals to cages denies them everything that is natural and important to them, such as foraging for food, tending to their young and even jumping.

Many thanks to all our supporters who sent letters and to the council for not supporting this kind of abuse.

What right do we think we have to abuse and disrespect every other species on this planet just for our greedy selfish ways. No thought as to how these or any other animal feels. We are so ignorant we can’t leave other species alone to live their life as they should.

  11. avatar Kevin says:

Why is that only man exploits other animals? Aren’t we supposed to by the most highly evolved species on this planet?

The things we do to animals are awful. How can people be so cruel?

As someone who lives in Derbyshire, I pleased to so see this action worked.

I had a rabbit. He was so afraid when I first had him. He would hide out of sight; always. After getting him a female partner (both neutered) he relaxed more and began to enjoy life with the female who protected him.
Art Garfunkel’s song BRIGHT EYES always reminds me of rabbits. I love the way they Binky too (jump high in the air twisting their body with a joyous gesture). How lovely!
Then I see rabbits living in HELL on factory farms and sent to slaughter when they are only five months old. What kind of life is that? It is not a life worth living is it?
These are real sentient animals with the most loving nature that can bring joy to your life as pets. They should be indoor and in pairs not imprisoned in cages to small to turn around. They need exercise to run and play to keep their long colon in motion and their back bones healthy.
