David Cameron, Stop Clowning Around – Ban Wild Animal Circuses Now!

Despite having been instructed by Parliament in 2011 to get wild animals out of circuses, David Cameron has been heel-dragging and stallingon implementing a ban. Whilst the government has finally begun work on draft legislation, it’s insisting on primary legislation which could take years, prolonging the suffering of wild animals in circuses, rather than enacting an immediate ban under section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act.

In 2011, a Defra consultation saw 94 per cent of respondents, including the British Veterinary Association, backing an end to this archaic form of entertainment. Earlier this year, PETA, along with other major animal protection organisations, boycotted a second pointless and costly consultation because the questions did not allow for the rejection of the licensing provision, which would enable abusive circuses to hide behind a veneer of respectability.

Wild animals in circuses commonly suffer from chronic health problems, abusive treatment, psychological disorders and aberrant behaviour, and many die prematurely. By virtue of the very nature of circuses – which confine animals to cages or boxcars, force them to perform tricks which are totally unnatural to them and deny them the opportunity to engage in natural behaviour – animal welfare can never be ensured in a circus environment. Please urge MPs to take action to protect wild animals used in circuses now.

Cameron and his cronies couldn’t give a shit about animal rights.

    • avatar Vince says:

Your absolutely right Tracy. One of camerons pledges before election was he wanted to reintroduce fox hunting with hounds and more recently has allowed the go ahead of badger culling despite massive protest and evidence it will have little to no effect so it is no surprise cameron is doing little to nothing for circus animals. He is a nasty piece of work!

  3. Its about time this government did something decent and banned Circus animals.

  4. avatar jeannette marriott says:

Mr Cameron, why is it taking so long for your goverment to imperliment this act regarding animals in the circus? I find it sickening that even though people have stated the distress those animals go through YOU have done nothing? How many more animals must be and treated in such cruel and unnatural ways before you do something to stop it? By doing nothing you are condoning it!! Pass the act and consign circus and their ways to the HISTORY BOOKS.

  5. avatar Kath says:

WHY are you dragging your feet on this Mr Cameron? What are you getting out of it? Surely circus owners aren’t that powerful that you will allow to continue something that the vast majority of voters are against.

I believe that allowing wild animals in circuses is counter productive anyway as most people will boycot circuses as long as the practise continues.

  6. avatar Chaitanya says:

Stop clowning around and stop the cruelty towards animals. They need liberation at the earliest.

  7. avatar Jose M. Waechter says:

    The PM’s position is ridiculous….

  8. avatar amanda gardiner says:

  9. avatar p newman says:

Cameron, yet again you have gone back on your word. You really are becoming a major let down.
You’ve turned out to be as useless as the rest of them. What a shame, you had the chance to put things write and you’ve let the public down again.
No more Tory votes from here.

  10. avatar Ingrid says:

keep your promises, mr Cameron! Act for those who cannot speak for themselves!

  11. avatar Richard says:

The problem with Cameron is he is a fox hunter and enjoys shooting so doesnt care a jot about animals and I hope he is out of Government before he can overturn other animal protection laws

  12. avatar Cheryl Baxter says:

This is animal cruelty. Stop dragging your feet and sort it out

  13. avatar MATHIEU Christine says:

Il faut cesser de comparer l’animal à un objet ou à une peluche : c’est un être bien vivant, doué de sentiments, d’attentions et de fidélité bien plus grands parfois que les humains eux-mêmes !!

  14. avatar Caroline Westbrook-Jones says:

You are supposed to be a man with compassion, but the reality is that you are not showing any, Actions speak louder than words!

  15. avatar Janet Charles says:

    Ban these circuses NOW

  16. avatar jill Barrett says:

HOW CRUEL & SOUL LESS YOU ARE …YOUR REPUTATION IS DOWN THE DRAIN!!

  17. avatar Pamela Whittaker says:

Animal cruelty in any shape or form is inexplicable. Society seems hell bent on eliminating by culling or any means to rid this lovely place we live in of all it’s wild life. I wonder if in the future school children will know what a wild animal was.
Mr Cameron please please stop all animal abuse in any shape or form it takes, animals DO have feelings, I often wonder how the people who inflict torture to any animal would feel if the same was being inflicted on themselves.

  18. avatar Keith Melton says:

Using animals in circus is wrong. We have evolved enough now to know it is wrong. It is simply exploitative of sentient creatures who are unable to speak for themselves

  19. avatar Peter Hawes says:

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY. IT NEEDS TO STOP. IT IS SELFISH AND DOWNRIGHT IMMORAL

  23. avatar Robin How says:

Come on David, This decision is a no brainer – stop Live animals in circus performances,

  24. avatar lorna laverick says:

It’s shocking that animals are still used in circuses throughout the world, let alone in the UK.
Stop this barbaric practice right now, there is no need to drag this out, just stop it.
All animals used in circuses suffer, they do not belong in a circus but should be left to live their lives in the wild. We as humans have no need to watch animals that are made to perform, it is NOT entertainment and they suffer terribly.
    STOP IT NOW.

  25. avatar Ramona Stoicescu says:

    Please stop animal cruelty

  26. avatar Jessica Reeves says:

The people you are supposed to represent are in the majority in favour of banning the exploitation of animals in circuses. Please, let’s see some democracy in action – enforce the ban, now!

  27. fao Mr Cameron I urge you to rethink on this, these animals are wild and do not need to put on show and do tricks and in most cases get beaten to perform we are in the 21st century now please have some compassion 9 out of 10 children think it is not right to see animals like this its barbarick

  28. avatar Rose Ogorzaly says:

    Dear Sir:
Perhaps if you require circuses to follow the example of Cirque du Soleil (no animal acts allowed, only talented human acrobats), these circus owners will eventually realize that paying humans to perform is more is more profitable than beating wild animals to submission.
    Thank you for your time.

  29. It is no surprise that Mr Cameron is dragging his heels regarding a ban on wild animals in circuses. He is obviously supremely unconcerned about animal welfare. He loves hunting. What gives him great joy is to shoot two stags together, cull all our badgers, push forward funds for cruel animal experimentation. In short, he is the worst thing that could possibly have happened for this country , especially it’s animals. And we all know how people who are cruel to animals behave to the old & children as well. The sooner he is removed from office , the better!

  30. avatar Lynn Smith says:

Mr. Cameron, Are you kidding me???! Sir…Do The Right Thing. Change has come. Act Now. This kind of abuse to our beautiful Wildlife will no longer be tolerated by the good people of the World. Now you know.

  31. avatar Beth Laurents says:

    Mr Cameron,
Listen to the British people… over 90% of us do not want this babaric treatment of animals to continue- is this your idea of a democracy?

  32. avatar pam simpson says:

No animal should be kept in unnatural conditions especially for human so called amusement david cameron should ban animals in circus’s with immediate effect. saying that he should also stop animal experiements, culling badgers and ensure hunting does not resume

  35. avatar Kerri Darrington says:

  36. avatar Glynis Martin says:

Hi Dave. Kill any animals today? Not yet? You’d better get busy or someone else will get to set their dogs on those poor foxes, kill a few badgers or torture lions, tigers and elephants with cattle prods and of course, the mighty bull hook. Perhaps you’re out drinking and bragging with your friends about your latest triumphs? Isn’t that what you do, Davey? Boast about how much blood you’ve spilled? Well guess what, I’ve got a little secret for you. It doesn’t matter how many women, children or animals you torture or kill, your little penis is still not going to get any bigger, Peewee. THE BEST AND LATEST U TURN IS THE BEST ONE YET ..NO TO THE BADGER CULL , YOU REALLY NEED TO LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE JUST SOMETIMES , MAYBE YOU WOULD FIND MORE SUPORT IF YOU SUPORTED ANIMALS RIGHTS.
THESE ARE GODS CREATURES AND OF HIS CREATION ,AND THEY DESERVE FAR BETTER.
ANIMLALS ARE NOT FOR SO CALLED ENTERTAINMENT , WILD ANIMALS SHOULD BE WHERE THEY WERE INTENTED TO BE , FREE . AND NOT IN A CIRCUS BIG TOP SUFFERING .
