Despite having been instructed by Parliament in 2011 to get wild animals out of circuses, David Cameron has been heel-dragging and stalling on implementing a ban. Whilst the government has finally begun work on draft legislation, it’s insisting on primary legislation which could take years, prolonging the suffering of wild animals in circuses, rather than enacting an immediate ban under section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act.

In 2011, a Defra consultation saw 94 per cent of respondents, including the British Veterinary Association, backing an end to this archaic form of entertainment. Earlier this year, PETA, along with other major animal protection organisations, boycotted a second pointless and costly consultation because the questions did not allow for the rejection of the licensing provision, which would enable abusive circuses to hide behind a veneer of respectability.

Wild animals in circuses commonly suffer from chronic health problems, abusive treatment, psychological disorders and aberrant behaviour, and many die prematurely. By virtue of the very nature of circuses – which confine animals to cages or boxcars, force them to perform tricks which are totally unnatural to them and deny them the opportunity to engage in natural behaviour – animal welfare can never be ensured in a circus environment. Please urge the Prime Minister to take action to protect wild animals used in circuses now.

It is terrible. People should boycott circuses altogether. Who wants to see animals parading around a ring. It is NOT entertainment. We should all be caring for animals now more than ever before, and ensure that they stay in the wild where they belong.

  2. avatar A Abran says:

Empathy is a must not an option! Just because we could oppress animals, just like we have oppressed women, children & slaves we deemed to be forced to serve us & tolerate every violence. It’s never right to violate ANY living being, animals, human being & plants! Please STOP the torture of these innocent animals! You’re in a power seat where you can make a positive impact on our friends, the animals while bringing harmony & peace through your loving & caring action to our world!

    Thank you for caring.

  3. avatar D. Travillion says:

People need to realize that circus animals are being tortured! It’s not entertainment; it’s animal abuse!

  4. avatar Michelle Soule says:

Please look within yourself and answer if what you are allowing to be done to these innocent animals is something you are willing to wear upon YOUR soul at YOUR judgement?

    Dear Sir,
We are not by the most part a backward Nation looking to the past for our entertainment, bear bating, cock fighting, lions, tigers in cages, the mighty elephant made to perform in the most hideous, unatural ways. Ok, forget bear baiting and cock fighting, however, bare in mind dog fighting still goes on in our enlightened modern day, animal loving nation. However, to the point, there is no place, under any circumstances should we still see wild animals, caged and brutilized to perform in unatural ways as entertainment in circuses. We have seen many times in the media how circus animals are vunerable, kept in poor conditions and mistreated. This is indeed looking backwards to the dark ages. Please allow us to move on and show some compassion by implementing an immediate ban under section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act and put an end to animals the suffering.

  6. avatar Jane McCulloch says:

Exotic animals do not belong in circuses,it is demeaning to them as well as cruel to force them to do unnatural acts which are forced on them through brutality. I do not support animal cruelty and therefor I do not attend circuses.

  7. If countries like Peru, Greece and Bolivia can ban the use of wild animals in circuses then so can the UK. Pathetic, spineless Government. And this inaction is when 96% of the UK population demands a ban? Just what are we waiting for?

  8. avatar James says:

Why doesnt your organization to something about the circus that comes to Monaco every year? It’s the most popular circus in Europe and when I attended last year it made me sick to my stomach. They drug and starve the animals and the circus is attended by the richest people in the world. If your organization wants to make an impact and a statement they should protest the crique international de monte carlo.

Think about It the animals would be grateful.

  9. I live in France. Every year the animal circus comes to town. Thousands of tickets are sold , they call this entertainment and they reckon it is a nice opportunity for kids here to see wild animals up close. This needs to stop now. Did you know that Bull Fighting is also a spectators sport here in France…bet you thought it was only happening in Spain….!! There is no place for any of this in the so called modern world we are supposed to be?

Another thing… ban the sale of Foie Gras in England as they did in California. The way you can help with this is to stop buying food from an outlet that stocks it…eventually they will stop selling Foie Gras.

  10. Keep up the good work you are doing Sir Moore by making people aware of the Foie Gras cruelty. Your hard work and dedication on this will not be in vain. We are with you all the way on this Bond.

    Nigel Village in France.

  11. avatar sandra Rose says:

please i beg you to stop all this cruelty of circus animals they should be free i guess you would not like it if it happened to you or any of your precious loved ones. STOP IT AND FREE THEM ALL NOW PLEASE. please listen to us all we are speaking out for the animals has they cannot tell you and share their pain from so called animal lovers. may god be on their side and yours to open your eyes to put an end to it all. thank you.

  12. This is discussing how no one is doing anything about animals in circuses I would never go to a circus and support this barbaric act of FORCING animals to do trick to amuse people the only people who would be amused are the evil animals neglecters their self
How can any human pay for or sit and watch a circus it’s evil
Why Is David Cameron not doing anything I have already complained about this to the RSPCA how ever they told me it could be 2014 to get a ban for animals in circuses ??!why what’s so Hard about right and wrong animals are suppost be in the wild not sedated and forced beaten and abused to do tricks
Cruel stop this now why wait what are we waiting for the animals are suffering now they carnt wait

  13. Stop this immediately how is it right for animals to be forced BEATEN and abused to perform in a circus this is horrible who would support this or even take there children to watch this it’s sick how this is still going on in this day and ages
Stop this now animals belong in the wild not in a cage all day prof sedated and beaten to do tricks
You can see in any picture of a circus the animals are deeply unhappy and neglected

  14. avatar Emily says:

It’s horrible how people think its ok for wild animals to be forced to live in disgusting conditions and perform just so some people can laugh at them…they should be banned all over the world!

  15. ITS BABARIC IN THIS DAY AND AGE TO THINK OF LIVE ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES IN 2013 , THEY SHOULD BE IN THIER OWN HABITAT , ROAMING FREE IN THE WILD ?
ITS NOT RIGHT FOR ANY ANIMAL TO BE CAGED, THEY DO FEEL PAIN, SUFFERING AND GET DEPPRESED JUST AS WE ALL DO. TO THINK OF LIVE ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES FOR YEARS MUST BE SOUL DISTROYING FOR THE POOR ANIMAL AS WELL AS PUTTING UP WITH TERRABLE CRUELTY! A CIRCUS CAN BE VERY GOOD IF THEY TAKE ALL THE ANIMALS OUT OF IT ? LETS GET THIS STOPPED NOW !!!!

  16. avatar Kate Leigh-Hunt says:

At least keep a few of your promises! Stop this vile practise now.

  17. avatar Barbara Edwards says:

    Dear Mr Cameron.
You may not reach office a second time – maybe you will. Will you; won’t you?
Wouldn’t you like to make a stunning difference to something that would please thousands of people in this country and many more abroad?
How would you like to be magnificent in character yet forced down to become a slave of entertainment? We are talking about elephants, tigers and lions. It is criminal for them to be whipped and forced into doing something so unnatural to them that life is not worth living. When you are hungry you eat – if only they would not eat, which seems to be the only way out for them.
Be a gentleman and do something good for them. The best thing you can do is to ban all animals from circuses. Educated people abhor such cruelty. You know that don’t you? Then please save them.

  18. avatar Ryan Harris says:

I have never been to a circus in my life as of how they treat animals! I find it barbaric and cruel!!

  19. avatar Ian M Hoggan says:

Dear Prime Minister. Just think for a moment and consider this?

We are invaded by a vastly supirior race of beings, not disimilar to us in many ways and they confiscate your two remaining children. They cart them off to their planet in metal cages and make them perform rediculous tricks for their paying customers and if they don’t perform these pointless tricks they’re beaten to within an inch of their lives. Think about it and stop this barbarick despicable travisty we call entertainment. And you’re a Christian too!!! Don’t really think God saved the animals for this kind of treatment, do you?????? I’m an athiest for this reason and a vegatarian. If you look back through history, and it doesn’t matter which way you cut it, they are our cousins. We share our DNA with all life on this once gorgeous (before modern man) Planet.

  20. avatar PAULINE WARD says:

PLEASE MR CAMERON, DO THE RIGHT THING AND FREE THESE POOR CIRCUS ANIMALS FROM LIVES OF TORMENT AND TORCHURE. WHAT IS THE REAL REASON YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS BILL ? SLAVERY HAS LONG SINCE BEEN ABOLOSHED SO WHY ARE YOU INFLICTING SUCH HORRIBLE CRIMES ON OUR FELLOW CREATURES? I WILL PRAY FOR YOU, THAT YOU FIND IT IN YOUR HEART TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION, THE ONE AND ONLY MORAL DECISION THAT IS ACCEPTABLE IN THIS “MODERN” WORLD. FREE THE CIRCUS ANIMALS AND DO NOT LET MONEY BECOME THE ROOT OF YOUR EVIL. THANKYOU.

  21. avatar Eliza Hardy says:

This is horrific. It’s inhumane. It’s outrageous. Why is David Cameron prolonging this? Why should animals suffer for our entertainment?! I hate this. I can’t believe that in the 21st century that this is still happening. Think of the horses, seals, rodents etc that are put through this cruel industry. Why?
