UK Among the Few NATO Nations That Use Animals for Military Training

Trauma training sees live animals shot, stabbed, mutilated and killed in horrific training exercises for military medical personnel. More than three-quarters of NATO allies use simulators or other non-animal models because they recognise that animal training bears no resemblance to real battlefield conditions. The UK, shockingly, is not among these NATO countries.

A  recent study by PETA US published in the August 2012 issue of Military Medicine, the journal of US military surgeons, reveals that 22 of 28 NATO nations do not use animal laboratories for military medical training. The six NATO countries using animals in invasive and often deadly procedures are Canada, Denmark, Norway, Poland, the US and the UK.

The continued use of live animals by UK and US armed forces is impossible to justify. Superior non-animal methods are used exclusively by civilian surgeons and accident and emergency specialists in the UK and ensure that professionals deliver a high standard of care to the victims of major accidents and violent crime.

Even though modern simulators that “breathe” and “bleed” have been shown to better prepare doctors and medics to treat injured humans than animal laboratories do, UK military personnel take part in archaic biennial training exercises with live pigs. Worse still, they circumvent the fact that medical training of this kind is not permitted in the UK by conducting the training abroad in Denmark.

This is a totally disgusting practice and is not needed in this day and age. There are vastly superior non-animal methods of training that are used by civilian surgeons which deliver a high standard of professional understanding and care. This is outrageous and should not be allowed to continue. Animals are not here for humans to mutilate and kill at their whim.

The monstrous maiming, torturing, traumatizing and gruesome killing of completely innocent and hapless animals that is perpetrated by the US and UK militaries are unpardonable atrocities. It’s killing for the sake of killing. In the US innumerable live goats and pigs have been irreverently and egregiously massacred for military training purposes. I used to think our two nations were the greatest on earth but at times it appears that we are actually demonic especially in reference to our dastardly mistreatment of animals.

Is there no way we can get this stopped?

My husband was in the US Army and he didn’t become a medic because he would have had to go through this training. He got out of the Army in January (11bravo Infantryman) and we are both animal rights activists. There is no need for this and it should stop.

Unfortunately, knowing the Army, even if they were given a direct order to stop it would slip through the cracks. What goes on behind closed doors would surprise the average civilian. Smoking, drinking, drug addiction (lots of drugs and alcohol abuse), suicides, murders. The list goes on. Not murders overseas, murders on military bases and suicides. Things that go unreported.

I don’t blame all soldiers or the military for this because there are decent people who want nothing to do with it, but the fact remains it does go on and someone needs to know about it to stop it! If the news would cover this shit…

there must be some one to send mail to, leon pinetta?.. their is a website where people can start a petition someone needs to do this!.. and, please everyone put this in your facebook, and other sites as well. PLEASE!…

  7. HI: This is to let you know that Countries will have to pay dearly for not giving

    their animals peace.

Treatments are to be stopped when the animal does not receive proper anesthesia for the procedure.

I bet you, half way thru the exercise the animal wakes up and feels all is done.

You are a bunch of sadits, and malicious people and should be punished.

    Anne

  8. Stop the ancient way of using animals for experiment. Animals are not always properly put to sleep, thus pain comes in and death follows. Shame on you.

Leave the animals alone, go and shoot yourselves where the sun don’t shine

  10. avatar Nat says:

We are a group of British, Austrian and Croatian animal protection activists. We have just discovered that the Austrian and German governments are paying individuals to snatching and transport of dogs from Istria, Croatia. These dogs are used by NATO, on Austrian and German territory, to test the efficacy of their latest weapons. They are released into the fields and killed in the most barbaric and inhumane of ways.

Our intention is to investigate this situation further and release a report that we hope PETA will support.

I anyone has any information relating to the above described barbaric practices, we would be immensely grateful if you could post it here.

    Many thanks
