Silverstone to Putin: Feed Pussy Riot Vegan Meals

Maria Alekhina, a vegan member of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot, reportedly collapsed from malnutrition during a recent court appearance where three members of the protest band are currently on trial in Russia.

After learning that Maria was struggling, Hollywood sweetheart and vegan cookbook author actor Alicia Silverstone sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin asking him to make plant-based foods available to imprisoned Alekhina and all Russian prisoners.

In her letter, Alicia writes, “Regardless of the trial and its outcome, I’m sure you can agree that everyone has the right to show compassion and refrain from harming animals by being vegan”.

PETA and Alicia stand ready to help Russian authorities plan nutritious, inexpensive vegan meals for all inmates.

Why should Mr. Putin respect Maria’s eating preferences if she showed utter disrespect and hurt feelings of parish in a church? Alicia (and Maria) should think before they do things like that.

    @ Brad
Why should “Mr. Putin respect Maria’s eating preferences…”

Because her diet is not in any way connected to her ‘crime’. I’m pretty sure that to deny her with food of her dietary lifestyle wasn’t included in the 2 year sentence was it.
Lets take your response to it’s conclusion: all imprisoned Jews or Muslims should be supplied with food containing pork, all Sikhs should be supplied with food containing beef …. What next? those allergic to peanut should be forced to eat peanuts???

Grow up Brad. Yes, they’ve been convicted BUT not because of their diet.
To deny her of vegan food is a clear sign that Russia is returning to it’s former human rights abusing position.

Yes, they should get vegan meals but they should be punished none the less, how about some loo scrubbing?
Don’t draw sympathy to them they could have protested elsewhere.

How about we all respect and support Maria’s own human right to make a personal choice, to live or die. This is her responsibility no-one else’s, and if there is only meat to eat, she can always make a pledge to survive and dedicate her time to animal charities to honour the animals she ate to fight on.
