You Did It: Air France Cancels Live Monkey Transport for Animal Testing!

Within a few hours of obtaining reports that Air France was planning to transport 60 live monkeys from Africa to a United States laboratory for use in animal experiments, PETA and several of our international affiliates quickly mobilised members and supporters to take action.

Within 24 hours, you and others like you managed to generate 68,000 e-mails, thousands of Facebook posts and tweets, and hundreds of calls. Thanks to your fast work and dedication, we are thrilled to confirm that Air France has cancelled plans to deliver these monkeys into the hands of experimenters!

This fantastic show of support proves once again that strength in numbers and coordinated actions can have a huge effect on companies. This victory couldn’t have been possible without your help. From all of us at PETA, a huge “Thank you!” to everyone who helped stop this transport! We are now urging Air France to create a formal policy to prohibit future shipments of primates to labs.

With this victory so fresh, please use your voice to influence the Home Office not to weaken protection laws for animals in laboratories in future.

Please dont hurt them. I love monkeys and cant stand to see them hurt. How would u like to be tested on. Just because they dont have a voice of thier own doesnt mean that they dont feel like the rest of us. Hell, I will be thier voice. STOP HURTING US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What happens to the monkeys now?
They still get sent to Chicago, but on a slow, sea sickening ocean voyage?

Thank you for stopping Air France from transporting the monkeys to the labs. Can you tell me if they stopped the transport totally or just didn’t deliver directly to the labs? It is not clear above. Great to follow up with the airline. Has any follow up been done with the labs concerned, who are the real culprits in this?

Please stop the transporting of monkeys to America. We can no longer leave our heads in the sand over what will happen to them. Also, to transport them would be a living hell. PLEASE DO NOT TRANSPORT ANIMALS.

don’contribute in such a cruelty! research on live animals is useless for scientific purpose and it should be banned and repealed from any society which wants to be considered civilized.

  15. avatar Sue says:

How could anyone treat these beautiful animals in such an horrendous way. The ‘so called’ humans that do this should be experimenting on and then discarded as they do with these lovely animals.

  16. avatar Nanci Dagragnano says:

It is time we put an end to animal test, wherever it may occur! We are in the XXI century, aren’t we? No more time for
    Barbarian things like these!

  17. avatar Aoife says:

Do not play a part in animal testing; by transporting the animals AirFrance must take responsibility for their role in this cruelty.

  18. please stop tourching animals..

  19. avatar Harriet Spooner says:

We don’t need to experiment on animals, surely we’ve moved on from this unnecessary cruelty…..

  25. avatar Susan McAlinney says:

Fear these poor creatures will still be used/abused/transported – just out of sight and publicity! Sickening; echo Mercedes comments.

  26. avatar Jan Garen says:

I have heard that Air France went back on their word and collaborated with KLM to transport the monkeys anyway. The story came via the Facebook site Smash Air France-KLM. If this is true we all need to redouble our efforts to target Air France and urge a boycott on them until they stop. I wonder if anyone knows anything about this betrayal.

  27. avatar LC says:

  28. avatar Lyuba Flanagan says:

    Stop hurting innocent animals!!!
People do NOT have any right to inflict pain on other living beings on the planet.

  29. avatar Maria says:

Hope this action will be forever and others will follow. Society that allow suffering of animals can’t be called humane.

  30. avatar Jack says:

    Down with KFC !!!!

  31. avatar Evlin Lake says:

Please leave a message @ Air France on their FB Page. … Ask them to retract all future plans to transport 60 monkeys into the US WR for cruel and inhumane lab experiments. Vivisection is documented as the cruelest torture in history, pure evil… their continued abuse is disgrace to France and the US. http://www.facebook.com/airfrance?sk=wall

  32. avatar T Dolbear says:

Please can you tell me what is happening to the monkeys now – has another airline transported them or are you still on the case to rescue them?????

    Please respond. Thanks.

The Wednesday 1 February Air France shipment of 60 monkeys to the US was definitely cancelled because of last week’s campaign. Persuading one of the world’s largest airlines to back down, even if just for one shipment, is a testament to how effective we can all be when we spring to action, and helps build the social capital and momentum we need to win the entire campaign.

As of now, we have not seen any evidence showing that it was shipped at a later time by Air France or anyone else (it would have to be Air France because no other airline flying in or out of Mauritius ships primates). There are some reports suggesting that and we are trying our best to determine if they are accurate or not and will update people as the information rolls in.

Whether or not another shipment of monkeys followed the one we got cancelled, Air France will continue to do this until the public convinces them to stop, so, its very important that people continue to contact them asking them to adopt a policy against shipping primates destined for labs. We are putting an action alert up this week which will target the remaining companies who choose to accept nonhuman primates as cargo.

Could you please confirm that for sure Matt? I’ve read that they renegued on their promise and did indeed ship those monkeys to the US! (SEE http://www.clicanimaux.com/catalog/agendon_info.php?evenement=353)
I have posted on their French and US facebook page. I would love to know that you’re right !! Thanks

    • avatar Matt says:

My colleague Justin at PETA US, and his team have been in direct contact with Air France, the statement above came from Justin to me.

Air France have not said that they will not ship monkeys in the future, but the positive result we achieved with all of your help last week will count towards future actions against the remaining air companies who still choose to transport nonhuman primates.

We believe that Air France did not renegue on their promise with these 60 monkeys.
