Victory! Ocado Drops Foie Gras

© iStockPhoto.com / GlobalP

We’re dancing the funky chicken at PETA UK in celebration of some great news for ducks and geese! Following contact by PETA and members of the public, Ocado, an online grocer, has agreed to end the sale of foie gras. Ocado delivers food products from a variety of well-known brands, including Waitrose, Heinz and Hovis, as well as having their own range.

PETA’s foie gras exposé – which shows how ducks and geese suffer during foie gras production as metal pipes are rammed down their throats – … Read more.

European Commission to Pamela Anderson: Thanks for Getting in Touch About Cosmetics Testing

As Yvonne reported last month, the famous Pamela Anderson brought welcome attention to the threat to the 2013 deadline for banning the sale of animal-tested cosmetics in the EU by writing to the (slightly less famous) European Commissioner, John Dalli, about it on our behalf.

Since then, I’ve met the key people in Mr Dalli’s cabinet to discuss the 2013 ban, and one of them has also sent a reply to Pam. The good news is that Mr Dalli and his team clearly recognise the strength of feeling on this issue, … Read more.

PETA US Sues SeaWorld for Violating Orcas’ Constitutional Rights

In the first case of its kind, PETA US, three marine-mammal experts, and two former orca trainers are filing a lawsuit  asking a federal court to declare that five wild-caught orcas forced to perform at SeaWorld are being held as slaves in violation of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The filing—the first ever seeking to apply the 13th Amendment to nonhuman animals—names the five orcas as plaintiffs and also seeks their release to their natural habitats or seaside sanctuaries.

The suit is based on the plain text of the 13th

Don’t Worry – Kate Bush IS Fur-Free!

Legendary Wuthering Heights singer Kate Bush is used to being in the spotlight, but when promotional photos for her latest album, 50 Words for Snow, appeared online, many of her fans were concerned to see her wearing what appeared to be real fur.

In a statement she issued, Kate explains: “We have recently taken some photos and I just want to pre-empt any concerns there might be as I’m sure most of you will feel the same way as I do about wearing real fur. All the fur in these … Read more.

With the release of their new album Sinners Never Sleep we wanted to show you the ad that You Me At Six starred in for peta2, a great pro-adoption ad with the band. You can check out an interview with the band members here.

Occupy Compassion!

PETA’s “pig” greeted protesters near St. Paul’s Cathedral this week by handing out free vegan sausages and encouraging them to spare a thought for the millions of animals who suffer every day on intensive confinement–style factory farms controlled by major corporations.

On factory farms, pigs have their tails cut off without being given painkillers, calves are torn away from their mothers shortly after birth and chickens are crammed by the tens of thousands into windowless sheds, where the ammonia from their accumulated waste burns their eyes and throats.

Stand up for the … Read more.

In Memory of Betty: Lancashire Hotpot, Veganised

We were very sad to hear that long-standing Coronation Street actor Betty Driver, who played barmaid Betty Williams in the mainstay ITV programme, passed away on Saturday morning. Although Betty’s character became well known for her signature Lancashire hotpot, the real Betty, a committed vegetarian, would never have tasted the stuff. In memory of Betty, we’ve found a delicious vegan hotpot recipe that we’re sure she would have loved, courtesy of Naomi at The Gluttonous Vegan.

Here’s a recipe for a delicious hotpot dinner with simple ingredients that you’ll likely … Read more.
