Another UK Abattoir Caught Out Inflicting Harrowing Abuse

Barely a year after Animal Aid first released harrowing footage taken inside UK abattoirs, they have uncovered more abuse. Video footage secretly recorded at Elmkirk Ltd (Cheale Meats) makes for distressing viewing, but astonishingly, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are refusing to prosecute those responsible because the abattoir staff were not consulted about the cameras.

The hidden cameras at the Cheale Meats abattoir recorded staff punching pigs, hitting them with bats, burning their faces with cigarettes and forcing injured pigs to drag themselves into the stun pen. One terrified pig is seen being dragged by his ears. As was repeatedly documented in footage secretly filmed in other abattoirs, improper use of the electric tongs that are supposed to stun the animals is clearly visible. This misuse is known to cause pigs excruciating pain.

This is the ninth UK abattoir that has been filmed by Animal Aid in the past 30 months. Video footage from one abattoir showed such horrific abuse that the facility was closed down. At Cheale Meats, the Food Standards Agency have revoked one abattoir worker’s licence and increased the level of monitoring at the abattoir. This is a pathetic response to the abuse that has been exposed.

Pigs are sentient beings who are every bit as capable of feeling fear and pain as we are, yet they are at the mercy of sadistic or neglectful abattoir staff and suffer horrific abuse before being mercilessly killed. Switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet is a healthy choice, but more importantly, it is a compassionate choice because it reduces the demand for meat and ultimately saves the lives of animals.

This is so damn cruel. Well done to Anima Aid for doing this investigation and exposing the abuse yet again.

absolutely disgusting – I’ve already sent complaints to DEFRA not the first time they decide not to prosecute and punish and i dont think it will be the last. they need to take this sort of behaviour seriously as we all know what sadistic monsters like these end up doing next…..

Horrorific absolutely terrible, I couldn’t watch without the tears flowing. How did this company/people abusing these poor Pigs not get a harsher sentence? If it was a human going through the same trauma, people would be in an uproar. This has to stop and I seriously can’t see it happening any time soon.
I’m pleased they managed to catch this crazy person, however there’s plenty more where that idiot came from.

  4. avatar Sharleen says:

Why isn’t it compulsory to have CCTV in these places? Surely that would be a big deterrent for this kind of horrific behaviour.

  5. avatar Carole says:

Apparently Cheale did have CCTV cameras installed in all the areas that Animal Aid filmed, so obviously it wasn’t a deterrent for these horrible people.

  6. avatar Sharleen says:

Yeah I just got a letter back from DEFRA saying that there was CCTV, apparently it somehow didn’t capture the abuse though and has now been ‘upgraded’.

Didn’t capture the abuse, what film were DEFRA watching.Walt disney!!
DEFRA is a DISGRACE,and unless they can do their job properly, they should
be forced to resign. And what is 2urgraded” mean?

Thank you PETA for the tremendous achievement worldwide to stop cruelty to animals.
I do not understand why animals have to be slaughtered so aggressively for human consumption. I understand that people will continue to eat meat and they do not want to know how the animals are killed. As long as the meat is nicely packaged, they ignore the suffering of the animal it comes from.

Why can’t animals be put down humanely, i.e put to sleep, instead of having their throats slit?

Another issue, do animals really have to be conscious while being killed for Halal meat?

  8. avatar Sue Hughes says:

Sickening sadists whose cruelty is condoned by Defra. No doubt I will receive pathetic excuses from my MP, from Defra and from the FSA. Disgraceful about Cheale’s CCTV footage missing the abuse, or was it edited? And where were the meat inspector and the vet? Too scared to do their job no doubt. Remember the TV documentary some time ago revealing meat inspectors being threatened with meat cleavers? These slaughterers are dangerous men. Who else could do such terrible work?

  9. [...] Once a year, this week claims to celebrate “butchers’ creativity and passion”, but there is nothing to celebrate about slaughtering and hacking apart innocent, sentient animals. Undercover investigations repeatedly show that abuse and cruelty are inflicted on animals in abattoirs. [...]

makes me wonder what sort of people defra are seeing as they had initially refused to use the video footage – WHY ?? what are they hiding ??

  12. I have been deeply affected by the footage on the PETA site and I will certainly be avoiding animal products. Once these animals no longer have a commercial food value (in a perfect world where everyone was vegan), then what would be their fate?

The entire industry makes me sick and I wonder if it will ever end?

Awareness starts in the educational system and should be part of the school curriculums.
