West End Stars to Fortnum & Mason: ‘Bring the Final Curtain Down’ on Foie Gras

Holding a large banner and signs that resembled a stage curtain and read, “Fortnum & Mason: Bring the Final Curtain Down on Foie Gras”, West End stage stars Jenny Seagrove, Peter Egan, and Carley Stenson joined PETA in a protest outside Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly today. Their point? That while the production of foie gras – the enlarged livers of force-fed geese and ducks – is so cruel it’s banned in the UK, Fortnum & Mason callously refuses to follow the lead of iconic department stores Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, who have stopped selling the inhumane product.

“Foie gras production is something straight out of a horror show”, says longtime PETA supporter Jenny Seagrove, who recently appeared in the smash hit The Country Girl at the Apollo Theatre. “It’s appalling that Fortnum & Mason, which trades on its British heritage, is refusing to stop selling a product so cruel that its production is rightly banned in the UK. I will be doing my utmost to alert fellow West End actors to this cruelty and urge them to choose one of the many other eateries in the West End until Fortnum & Mason makes the decision to remove foie gras from its shelves and menus.”
Other stage actors who have lent their support to PETA’s campaign include Steven Berkoff, Ruthie Henshall and Calendar Girls star Danielle Lineker. Famous supporters Sir Roger Moore, Kate Winslet and the Duchess of Hamilton have also participated in PETA’s foie gras campaign.
