50 Baths = 1 Steak

Playboy models and vegetarians Monica Harris and Victoria Eisermann shared a tub in Trafalgar Square today to mark World Water Day. The bathing beauties informed passers-by that it takes the amount of water in 50 bathtubs to produce just one steak. The action was designed to show that the best way to save water, fight the worldwide water shortage and clean our consciences is to go vegan.

“Not only is the meat industry cruel, it wastes huge amounts of water and damages the planet”, says bathing beauty Victoria Eisermann, who was voted PETA Europe’s Sexiest Vegetarian in 2007. “You can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist.”

It takes about 15,500 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of beef, compared with just 1,000 litres to produce 1 kilogram of wheat. A recent UN report found that the meat industry is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global”. Among these environmental problems are freshwater scarcity; the report calls the livestock industry “a key player in increasing water use” and “probably the largest sectoral source of water pollution”.

In addition, vegetarians and vegans are, on average, significantly trimmer than meat-eaters, and they are also less likely to suffer from heart disease, cancer, strokes and diabetes. Billions of animals raised for food each year endure routine abuse on crowded, filthy factory farms, where they are subjected to painful mutilations and face terrifying deaths.

Are you willing to strip off to help animals? Inhumanely raising and killing animals for food in the United States consumes 50 perecent of all the water used for for all purposes. It also causes more water pollution than any other destructive industry. The beef, meat, pork and poultry industries are responsibe for many water crises and massive ecological damage.

It isn’t fair that you’d just look at one side of a story. I am almost 100% sure that it is impossible for humans to survive if all of us opted to go vegetarian or vegan. We need animals like animals need animals. It’s the circle of life. The way they’re treated on the other hand is the problem. Why don’t we try to focus on that instead, it would benefit many people. Because I care for the well being of animals, but I also care for the well being of humans.
