Pamela Anderson Named Person of the Year

We are pleased to announce that the wonderful, big-hearted Pamela Anderson has been named PETA UK’s Person of the Year for 2010.

In just the past year, the list of Pam’s contributions to PETA UK has included promoting an irresistible – and racy – campaign poster in which her nearly nude body is shown painted with butcher markings, giving an address on animal rights at Oxford University and releasing a TV spot in which she is shown strip-searching air travellers for contraband (such as fur, exotic skins, leather and wool) that was stolen off animals’ backs.

On hearing about her award, Pam said, “I’m so tickled to be PETA UK’s person of the year. I’ve never met a vegetable I didn’t like, and I even included a pro-vegetarian line in my panto performance – I always find a way to speak up for animals! I’ve loved spending time in the UK in 2010, and particularly Liverpool, where it was my pleasure to share a drink with fellow vegetarian Sir Paul McCartney backstage at his intimate show. And I will always remember visiting an animal shelter on Christmas Day and meeting the beautiful homeless dogs and cats who I so hope someone will think about and take home in the new year. Thanks so much once again to PETA for the honour”.

In addition to her efforts in the UK, Pamela’s actions in 2010 have included urging ultra-Orthodox leaders in Israel to stop blocking anti-fur legislation and – while appearing on the Indian reality show Bigg Boss – petitioning Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to denounce the country’s cruel leather trade. And, of course, for many years Pamela has been penning letters, starring in ads and leading protests on behalf of PETA US in order to raise awareness of cruelty to animals and demonstrate how easy it is to avoid contributing to animal suffering.

A big CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU go out to Pamela from all of us here at PETA UK!

    Well done Pammy!

  2. […] During the past several weeks, quite a bit of press has been given to two celebrities who have committed time and financial resources to animal-related organizations.  Paris Hilton—heiress to the Hilton Hotels fortune, known for her extravagant lifestyle, wild partying, and varied pursuits within the entertainment and fashion industries—recently revealed a more earnest side when she volunteered some of her 200 hours of community service to the Las Vegas-based Animal Foundation, which operates one of the busiest shelters in the U.S. and recently inspired her to adopt a 3-year-old Chihuahua.  Also in the spotlight is Pamela Anderson, made famous by her numerous television and film roles and her tumultuous relationships, who has aimed for a higher purpose over the years by serving as an animal activist—the U.K. chapter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) just named her its 2010 Person of the Year.
