The Naked Truth About Homeless Dogs in Turkey

It’s not every day you see a bunch of nearly-naked blue people (no, not Smurfs) standing around the in middle of Strasbourg. But for UK student, Amy Gackowska, who is interning at PETA Germany, it was a surreal dream come true. In true PETA style, she stood scantily clad and painted head to foot in the blue and gold stars of the EU flag, accompanied by other inspired PETA Germany peeps to protest against the horrific abuse that homeless dogs suffer in Turkey.

Gathered outside the Council of Europe, Amy stood proud holding a sign which read “EU is watching you Turkey. Stop torturing dogs.” Go Amy! The demonstration highlighted the immense cruelty that homeless dogs are routinely subjected to in Turkey; starved in animal ’shelters’ (oh the irony!), dumped in remote areas and even massacred in large-scale poisonings. Yes, it’s clear, Turkey need to revise their definition of ’shelter’. Hmm…

Turkey, who is seeking membership to the EU, has a less than glowing record when it comes to animal welfare. As Amy suggested, “Turkey’s reputation within the European community would benefit if the country cracked down on animal abuse.”

It goes without saying that Amy has valuable assets (no pun intended) to offer the PETA Germany intern programme and you could have too! Just think, that could be you naked and standing up to animal cruelty, painted like a flag in the middle of France. I mean, who could resist that?! This blogger has been painted head to foot and paraded around Texas in America to protest Burberry’s sale of fur, and you know what? I loved every single minute of it. Find out more about interning at PETA US here or contact any of the other affiliates for information on their own intern programmes. Oh, and it’s not all about the nakedness…

Wake Up ! Peta, Turkey is 99% Muslim, and consider dogs vermin and dirty. No chance of any kind happenings for Turkish canines, even in the EU.

Well done Amy & friends, you’re braver than I could ever be!

There is no excuse for animal cruelty (not even religion Keith).

It’s one thing if your religion considers a species of animal dirty. It’s another entirely to suggest that that excuses gross abuse and neglect, and most of the muslims I know wouldn’t want to see any innocent creature suffer in those ways…

You need to understand more about cultures Jared. The welfare of Dogs in Turkey are of no, no interest for the majority of citizens. And be a bit more original using my phrase ‘ wake up,’ and getting a life is rather a naff saying these days.

keith, i think that you are just being ignorant to the suffering, almost as if you are condoning it because ‘its their way’ wise up. and just because they consider them vermin doesn’t make it right.

Certainly not condoning suffering Ashleigh, just read the two comments from the Turkish Gentleman. Actually your the ignorant uneducated one, to write such a pathetic comment. By the way I had a Anatolian Karabash as a loyal companion for 12 years. If you are aware what and where that breed comes from.

Keith, regardless of having an Anatolian dog or not, you or no one else has the right to make such misinformed comments about a people or any religion. Having the same distance and sceptical attitude to all organized religions, I *know* that there’s no single, uniform attitude of Islam towards canine companions. Nothing taught in Qur’an or by Mohammed the Prophet. So why not edcuating yourself about the real dynamics and real reasons of this particular situation (stray animal massacre in Turkey) instead of ignorance? If you wish to keep passing comments on a subject, you might as well wish to learn what’s it all about.

Perhaps all you clever detractors about my comments should have spotted my deliberate mistake about the Turkish comments, namely Lale & Ipek are female gender. Anyway I suggest to you all ‘ go live and wander the Turkish empire for some years and then come back and comment. Perhaps you should also if possible take a look at the Orphanages, then you may have some idea of the pecking order re: animal sufffering.
