Leona Lewis Named PETA’s Person of the Year 2008

Leona LewisAs the year draws to a close, it’s a time to sit and think about what we’re grateful for. Here at PETA it’s Leona Lewis, so that’s why we’ve named her our Person of the Year 2008!

It’s been a huge year for Leona, what with being literally the world’s hottest pop sensation and all. Not only has the X-Factor starlet won and been nominated for more awards than you can shake a stick at, including four – yep, count them, four – BRIT Awards, she has gone on to become one of the most in-demand artists of the year, breaking international charts with her catchy singles. But what excites us the most, is Leona’s non-stop caring for animals, and how she doesn’t let her skyrocketing music career get in the way of her ethics.

Thanks to her vegetarian lifestyle and commitment to vegan fashion (Leona is in the process of setting up a fashion line using no skins whatsoever, dontcha know), this compassionate Brit earned herself the crown of Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity in our poll earlier this year, along with Red Hot Chilli Peppers legend, Anthony Kiedis. So far, so good. But then she goes and places a big, fat, juicy cherry on the top by publicly shunning a £1million deal with ‘luxury’ department store, Harrods, because they continue to sell fur.

So, Leona, here’s our way of saying a huuuuge ‘thank you’ for speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for choosing compassion over cash, and sticking to your principles. Enjoy your award!

Yay, well done Leona! I heard that fur hag Liz Furley was meant to do the Harrods thing but dropped out. Not for the same reasons as our Leona though! Love Run by the way

I wasn’t that great a fan until I heard about the Harrods thing, now I’m always telling people how great Leona is. She deserves every award she gets and more - what a role model for young girls today eh!?

Leona is what celebrity should be all about, she is a decent hardworking compassionate woman who has principles and sticks to them, I admire her tremendously for her morals, her caring and her music.

England is blessed to have many talented animal loving vegetarians in the music industry. In addition to Leona Lewis there is Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Thom Yorke, Morrissey, Howard Jones, Heather Small, Bryan Adams and American Born Chrissie Hynde.

Leona Lewis is such an inspiriation. I recently became a vegetarian and have been for over a month maybe even more. Unlike others, I was never a fan of meat too much anyway, but seeing the truly horrific way in which animals are treat has sealed the deal for me, and I know I will never touch another animal to eat again. I do hope to someday become vegan, but im learning gradually to adjust now as im still quite young and becoming vegan is a big commitment and i dont want to try a half hearted attempt and fail. When im old enough to financially support myself, I will be donating to peta.

Well done, Megan! You have a great attitude and sounds like you are doing a good job :) Keep it up and keep checking back for more inspiration, and to chat with other veggie people. Don’t forget about peta2, they’re a great bunch and really fun for young people! x

I thought Leona seemed like a nice genuine person before reading this although her music isn’t my kind of thing (her voice however is beautiful). But I never knew until just now that she is a vegetarian or how principled she is! I am so pleased that she has stood by what she believes in and sent a message loud and clear that she won’t be linked with a store that continues to sell fur. I’m also looking forward to the clothing range… that’s exciting news… there just aren’t enough that are easily accessible in my opinion! :)

Leona, i’m sure it wasn’t a difficult decision for you to reject Harrods due to their cruel consumer focus - but i have to say, i applaud you for your tenacity in sticking with your ethical principles. Your own vegan clothing line will undoubtedly do much better than anything that can be associated with an exploitative, antiquated store for conspicuous consumption. I salute you! Thank you - you are an example to us all.

Reading this made me smile :) It is wonderful to see people celebrities & people who are in the public eye make a stand for animals. Hopefully more people & celebrities who love animals & are aainst cruelty will follow in Leona’s footsteps. I love Leona Lewis & her music, and after reading this I have even more respect for her! You rock Leona! :) x x

I am not a fan of Leona Lewis’ music, in fact I turn over the telly if her songs come on but I admire her personally for her lifestyle and commitment to animal rights. And her turning down Harrods has made her go up in my books.

Leona has a wonderful voice and bags of talent. She also has courage to stand up and be counted and tell Harrods to put their money back into their wallets until they stop selling fur in their stores. How refreshing to see a pop star protecting the rights of animals.

That’s great you have your standards for animals not being abused and can turn down that kind of money for a worthy cause! Right on & keep up the good work.
