Dog Meat Ban in Beijing

In a bid to clean up their image before the Beijing Olympics this year, restaurants have been slapped with a ban on serving up dog meat Investigating agency Ecostorm has exposed severe cases of animal cruelty through undercover video and photography reporting. Eating dogs and cats in China is a widespread problem but is by no means the only issue that needs addressing - the cat and dog fur industry is something PETA is currently campaigning to end.

But let’s be honest, at the end of the day cats and dogs are no different from the billions of pigs, cows, chickens and fish that are killed for food across the world. See what our friends at PETA Asia-Pacific are doing to help all animals – domesticated, farmed and wild.

The argument lies on how they’re treated whilst being farmed and how humanely they are killed.

Cats and dogs destined for food in China, are kept in the most horrific conditions, well below any basic husbandry standards, and they have to endure long painful deaths - in full view of their fury companions, waiting for their turn for torture.

Its goes without saying the long history of cruelty in China, towards all sentinent creatures. Not only dogs are being rounded up but cats also. The answer is simple any human kind worth his/her salt, will boycott these 08 Games.Or any travel within China..

it shouldn’t be banned just upcoming or during the Olympics.. it should be banned outright.. the conditions these poor animals are kept ie. several crammed into stifling a cage with barely hardly any room for movement for hours/days on end.. is horrendously cruel.. less needs to be said of the way in which they are killed.. for dogs intentionally slow and cruel..
it is utterly shameful and barbaric the treatment of animals in China both fur and meat trade.
How you can call or consider yourselves a ‘civilized’ country enough host the olympic games when this is the way you pitilessly and heartlessly treat your animals ..

China is considered to be the land of animal cruelty. The most horrifying side of China are the fur trade, dog & cat meat trade & the Animal Olympics. I’m happy that the Chinese Govt is doing something to clean up their ugly image . . .

Many years ago I made a vow never to visit China, not just because of the vile treatment of dogs and cats, but also because of the appalling trade in bear bile. High time they came into the 21st century as regards medicine…..would they visit a 12th century dentist?

There is not a country upon the planet that can boast it is without cruelty being inflicted upon creatures unable to stand up and speak out for themselves.

There is absolutely no excuse in the Twentyfirst Century when awareness is worldwide for continued archaic and barbaric behaviour.

I will not watch any of the Olympics taking place in China and endeavour not to by goods from China.

Write to their Embassy telling them of your feelings and intentions. Angela

yes without a doubt we need to boycot all these cheap imported goods that keep appearing on our supermarket shelves from china and japan, people need to start buying more english made products.Consumer power is the key to these countries that have no sense, continuing to defy moral laws and abuse humans as much as animals.

What is it about the Chinese culture that ignores animal suffering and is barbaric in its treatment of animals? Can anyone explain this to me? I would never visit this country.

I will never visit China, I will not watch the Olympics, and I check all goods I buy to make sure that they are not made there. The only way this Country will ever stop it’s barbaric practises towards animals (hopefully) is if the people of the world, and the Governments (thought this is unlikely) boycott anything Chinese and hit hard where it hurts most - THEIR ECONOMY!!!!

I also would never visit China or any of those Asian countries that are so cruel to animals. I know I love the Dalai Lama but I don’t even want to visit Tibet or India now. I am sickened by what I have learned and these are the last places in the world I ever want to see. Other countries that are extremely cruel to animals are also on my list. The Olympics can come and go but I won’t see it. Every time I look at anything to do with these countries I imagine the horrific cruelty that happens there. I never now eat at a Chinese Restaurant even here int he USA.

Don’t forget the beating to death of over 500,000 dogs because of a few cases of rabies! And don’t forget the dog cull of any dogs over 35cm (barely 14inches) - even dogs taken from their owners - because of the Beijing Olympics. Yes, boycott everything Chinese until these barbaric practices cease!

There are no animal welfare laws in China, and those working there for animal welfare have the hardest, painstaking and dedicated jobs..as for the animals, anything goes, literally in China, animals are THINGS to be used and abused, and eaten, cruelty ia a laugh to the abusers, and nothing is respected, even human life, where the programme ‘the killing rooms’ shows little children being left to die if they are surplus to the ‘one child policy’, or kidnapped by ‘child traffickers’…hopefully this will all change

The Olympics should never have been given to Beijing on ethical grounds, as it always happens it happened in Greece, to make the area acceptable for big business, the animals are cleared away, by any means they think necessary

The lack of respect for animals is China is part of the culture and sadly I believe it will take a generation to change. I will not watch the Olympics because I will only be reminded of the suffering being hidden as the rest of the world looks on.

There should be much more coverage on the news and in national news papers showing this barbaric and cruel way of life and death these poor poor creatures have to endure to bring it more in the general publics knowledge. Perhaps more people would then try and do something to stop it. The Olympics should be banned in China because of these atrocities both to animals and humans (Tibet) and any athletes with a conscience should boycott them. The people who commit these vile acts of torture are the lowest of the low forms of life on this planet. That also includes the seal killers, bull fighters, whale killers, fox hunters, badger bating the list goes on and on and all the inhuman people that causes suffering to any animal

yes the closing of dog meat “eateries” is cosmetic
it’s a start though, albeit for a short time - ( I wonder what they will do with the dogs during this time ! )
There surely cannot be ” enough ” dogs that are stray and abandoned to supply these restaurants all the time. where else are they getting them from ? Are they bringing them from other countries ?? Are they actually breeding them for food ??
can anyone answer these questions ????????????????????????

If China are ceasing this barbaric trade during the Olympics because they don’t want tourists to see, then they MUST know that this trade of dog meat is BAD and CRUEL. For years they have been stubborn and have said it is part of their culture and to leave them alone, but to cease it now just goes to show that they KNOW it is a disgusting trade. This is simply NOT good enough, dog meat, cat and dog fur should be BANNED FOR EVER. I will continue to sign petitions and spread the word to hopefully get this nasty evil trade STOPPED.
It’s not good enough China! You certainly get NO brownie points from me! Please everyone, I urge you to keep on campaigning, we are the animals voices.

i had some chinese aquaintances here in England.the seemed very nice and I was very happy for them when their first child was born. within less than six months the baby was shipped back to china to be brought up by relatives there.the brokenhearted mother having no say in the matter. this is how they treat their own , so what chance do animals stand with this unspeakable race. i might add the canadians are proving not to be much better.BOYCOTT CHINESE GOODS. this is the only way. NB they have now started omitting ‘made in china’ on their goods so you will have to assume it is made there if there is no country indicated.

I can just see our brave and honourable politicians ordering a boycott of the Olympics - NOT! These spineless toadies are more interested in the money making side of befriending the Chinese, despite even the traetment of the Tibetans. Let’s be perfectly honest, the Chinese are largely barbarians and have NO compassion whatsover. But don’t fool yourself into thinking they are alone, the world is full of barbarians who think nothing of torturing animals to death.

posted by John Laden on March 31st, 2008 at 11:30 pm

I would never travel to China or ever buy anything made in China. These people are true barbarians and their treatment of all animals is far worse than scandalous. They do not deserve to belong to the international community and they most definitely do not deserve to host the olympics or to be treated like a ciivilised nation. they do not treat any animals bound for slaughter humanely, not only dogs and cats. and it is well known that the animals killed for their fur are often skinned alive and suffer the worst torture and pain.

posted by Diana Arundale on April 1st, 2008 at 6:46 am

The way in which the Chinese mistreat animals is loathsome. But look how they treat people both in China and in Tibet. How China was ever chosen to host the Olympic Games beggars belief. Unfortunately, it all boils down to international trade and money. I was appalled, but not surprised, to hear George Bush say he was going to Beijing for the Games, and also our own PM say he was going to the opening ceremony in Beijing. I just hope that the Chinese don’t think that he is representing the views of the rest of us as he certainly does not represent me in any way. The Chinese have a reputation for animal cruely second to none, but let us not forget the Canadian seal hunters, the Japanese whalers, the Australians for “mulesing” and subjecting animals to the “sheep ships” which are destined for countries where the conditions in slaughter houses are unspeakably cruel. We must not forget our own examples of cruelty as witnessed in factory farming videos from PETA or people like Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall who recently highlighted the atrocities we subject our chickens to. More power to their elbow and those who go undercover to expose such things ought to be given a medal.
I agree that the only ways that these countries will, I hope, change their ways is through trade boycotts and other means which hurt them where it counts - in their pockets. I fear, however, that it will take a very long time to achieve if ever. More reason to continue to fight for those innocents who can’t speak for themselves and have no vote.

One more to add to the cruelty and torture is the tiger farms, these poor creatures raised for medicinal purposes. Also circuses where they remove the tigers teeth and claws and dope them so little children can sit on them! If only we could beam all these barbaric, so called humans into space and leave them there. I may say that the western world ignores all these horrors, as they do with cheap labour and unfair trade deals, so its up to us who care to be more active on a more truly caring society.

There once was a prophet who said ” A nation should be judged by the way it treats its animals” and boy was Ghandi right. All over the world especially in Asia animals are abused, tortured and beaten to death everyday for the disposal of the so called human race and by what right???? Watching videos and reading about all these atrocities makes me regret living on this planet.I just wish that these people will meet the same fate in this world and maybe the next. I think God made a mistake when he created humans and animals to live together.

it is called the power of the stronger over the weak or weaker .. and in this case.. also the voiceless..
I also feel very enraged when I learn of many many and all the suffering, pian and torture of animals.. not only in China but also elsewher in the world.. eg. France and it’s foie gras production. the bull fighting blood sport in Spain.. bear baiting in Pakistan, the Canadian seal slaughter.. sheep muesling in Australia.. canned hunting and dog fighting in the USA.. not to mention all the other countries.. all people who meter out such cruelty are despicable and deeply loathesome.. it’s also a form of BULLY.. the strong against the weak or defenceless..
however stating that you will ‘boycott’ Chinese goods or not watch the Olympics is will hardly bear any even the most minimal significant dent.. Chinese goods are PROLIFIC everywhere.. go to any store and pick something up.. more likely it will be made in China..
there are despicable human beings.. the ones that meter out cruelty in all it’s many forms to animals that causes terrible suffering and pain and eventually death.. remember..the BULLIES.. and cowards too of course. because they would cower to their knees if so much as a fraction of the suffering they inflict to the animals was in turn inflicted onto them..
all people who inflict suffering, pain or abuse to animals in whatever form or whatever trade.. are the most COWARDLY of BULLIES..
becuase they do not fear retribution (from the defenceless animals).. so they do what they do.. and continue to do..
God, pity, protect and save the animals!!!!

I don’ t know what are rigth words to stop suffering animals, I really don’ t know.
I am not sure human race is able to respect and love Earth, animals, itself, I have my doubts.
But I always continue to try, to hope one day this world could be better, one day…

ONE MAN’S SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO A DOG
The one absolutely unselfish friend that
a man can have in this selfish world,
the one that never deserts him,
the one that never proves ungrateful
or treacherous, is his dog.

A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity
and in poverty,
in health and in sickness.
He will sleep on the cold ground where
the wintery winds blow,
and the snow drives fiercely,
if only he may be near his master’s
side. He will kiss the hand that has no
food to offer, he will lick the sores
and wounds that come in encounter with
the roughness of the world. He guards
the sleep of his Pauper master as if he
were a prince.

When all other friends desert,
he remains.
When riches take wings and reputation
falls to pieces, he is as constant in
his love as the sun in it’s journey
through the heavens.
If misfortune drives the master forth
an outcast in the world, friendless
and homeless, the faithful dog asks
no higher privilege than that of
accompanying him to guard against
danger, to fight against his enemies.

And when the last scene of all comes,
and death takes the master in it’s
embrace, and his body is laid away in
the cold ground, no matter if all other
friends pursue their way, there by the
graveside will the noble dog be found,
his head between his paws, his eyes sad,
but open in alert watchfulness,
faithful and true, even in death.

-From a speech given by
Former Senator George Graham Vest
of Missouri. Delivered in 1870 when he
was acting as a lawyer in a suit against
a man who had killed the dog of his
client. -
He won the case.

I’m glad China has banned dog meat but will the ban be lifted when the olympics are over? It seems superficial to me. They should never have been allowed to bid for the Olympic games in the first place, let alone win it. Let face it, any nation who eat dogs and kill them in the most inhumane ways as well as other explicit cruelty to animals for example the animal olympics that is held for sport in China where they force kangaroos to box in the ring with people, are not humans in hemselves but mentlly derranged beasts. I boycott China and have no interest in China in any way at all.

I was browsing youtube recently and came across several videos named “Cat and Dog Massacre” I was and continue to be utterly disgusted by what I saw is completely legal in most parts of China and North Korea. I realize that most Americans eat beef, pork, poultry ect and that some of the techniques for killing those animals are extremely torturous. But, to witness animals that most humans consider best friends and family members treated, tortured, and killed in such a horrific manner broke my heart. I couldnt bare to watch the majority of the video. The Chinese government should ban the killing and eating of cats and dogs completely. I will not be supporting the summer olympics held in China this year, this issue being one of many reasons. FYI: I am a vegan all together and just wanted to contribute my opinion. Thank You

In the past few years I have really started to loath the Asian race. Their obscene cruelty defies comprehension. They seem to be a race of people totally lacking any empathy towards their fellow creatures. I mean, as a human being I always imagine the pain a creature must suffer when its misstreated. And because of this I really take care to not cause suffering to any creature, big or small. So is this their problem , a total lack of empathy and imagination? I will never travel to China as the thought of witnessing a cruel act on an animal and not being able to stop it would be to much for me to bear. I am an Australian, and yes there is a lot of cruelty here but fortunately the main population is aware of it and thanks to the interrnet is making a stand. But travelling through Asia you witness horible cruelty on a daily basis and when you make a comment the Asians just seem to look at you with a silly grin and really dont understand your concern. My final comment is that if a god does exist, couldnt he give just a little protection to the helpless animals. And surely he couldnt be too proud of our bad behaviour towards this once beautiful planet and its beautiful creatures. Thank You
