‘Dead, Dying or Doomed’: Animal Extinction Like Dinosaurs

It’s official – humans are wiping out animals at an epidemic rate. So say the headlines today (the Metro’s is best, see above), with figures published that will shock the entire nation. While human life has continued to boom, the decimation of the animal population is becoming more and more apparent.

Here are some figures, according to the Living Planet Index report, to get your head around:

In 35 years, the number of humans has grown from 4billion to 6.5billion.
Land-based species have declined by 25 percent.
Marine species by 28 percent.
Tropical land species by 55 percent.

The news comes after America put polar bears on the endangered species list due to global warming. And why do we have problems like this? I’ve said it once (well actually, probably more like a hundred times) and I’ll say it again – go vegetarian if you want to save these fuzzy white bears and the rest of the animal kingdom. It’s a win-win situation really!

Finally the Metro has pointed out and put in plain view the fact that we as a human race are expanding to the point we’re leeching every single other resource and living thing on the planet..

When people say that there’s too many squirrels, badgers or deer - they bring about a cull, simple as that - no questions asked - yet it seems nothing on a grander scale is being done about OUR overpopulation problem - i hate to paraphrase myself again but the Nazi’s destroyed millions upon millions of lives and obviously caused a massive uproar and hatred for generations.. How similar this situation feels to me.. We are not the master race, we are simply beings that have taken it upon ourselves to be the stewards.. with that comes great responsibility, let us never forget that..

Something has to be done. A good start would be to make replacing the current meat production system an urgent priority: as the number one threat to the planet, it’s the first thing on the list of changes that must be made if we and the rest of the Earth are to survive this disaster.

If we really are superior, we need to start taking the responsibility that goes with that. We are not immune to the destructive actions we take each and every day. Essentially, whether you believe in an afterlife or not, our bodies are animals, just as susceptible to the poisons of a ruined planet as any other species. If we let it get that far, we will become extinct. Everything will become extinct.

The responsibility rests with each and every one of us, to lobby for change not just in the animal industries but in every industry that threatens life on earth. The time to act is now, because now is all we have.
