Coronation Street Cast Speak Out for Bears

Calling all Corrie fans! If the sound of warbling trumpets and picturesque views of rooftops make you go weak at the knees, you’re in for a treat.

The stars of Coronation Street are helping PETA’s campaign to stop the hunting of Canadian black bears for their skins, used in the Queen’s Guards’ ceremonial caps. Sally, Cilla, Fiz, Maria, Liam, Kevin and co have posed wearing fake-bearskin caps with our “No Fur” logo and holding signs reading, “Save the Bears”.

This is such great news. Not only is Corrie one of the best British soaps going (ironically the show is really popular in Canada too), but it’s been running since 1960, with over 6,800 episodes to date – wow!

You can see the whole set of photos on UnbearableCruelty.com but here are one or two to get you going.

Gosh! Why Kevin Webster is wearing a leather coat? This is very bad, he has come forward to help bears and he is wearing a cow!

umm is that leather? how about we save BOTH cows and bears, not just one??

They probably have leather belts, wallets and shoes too, don’t worry. In Corrie’s defense, cows are tasty (I wouldn’t know about black bears; they’re everywhere, but no one is too keen on eating them).

And for the record, those fake-fur hats look awful.

Give the guy a break, we don’t even know it’s leather! One step at a time, one minute bear fur, the next cow leather…

It’s probably plastic, fake leather. Leather wouldn’t be good on stage, now would it?

Well, to be fair - they are on set and are told what to wear so perhaps he can be excused considering he’s speaking out on this issue..

For the record, Eastenders rules ;)

David, those fake fur hats are immediately more attractive given the source of the real items!

Anyone going to be leafleting at the Queens birthday parase? (The 14th i think?)

Don’t panic people, just last the hats, there’s a chance it’s faux leather, made from plastic…

You know that fake fur alternative that is totally non biodegradable which doesn’t recycle, and is causing irreversible extreme long term damage to this planet. For the majority who are blind to this fact, you might want to look at http://www.divemagazine.co.uk/news/article.asp?sp=332287698339330821486&v=2&UAN=3337

What’s even more absurd is that most of these hats are many years old, and therefore only one or two might get replaced in the year. It seems mighty wasteful to replace all of these in favour of something that is going to damage the environment more. I’m sorry to say PeTA are barking up the wrong tree here, there are much bigger environmental issues they can focus their attention on.

Why don’t we sort out what we are talking about before shouting about it. As the previous posts points out, is there any advantage to any one by replacing these old fur hatswith new, purpose made plastic alternatives? Follow the previous post’s link, to greenpeace site about plastic rubbish, and see what you think.
after all, Black Bears are not endangered, in fact are a pest in places in N america and Cananda, so can some one explain how they are different to cows?
I know that cows are farmed, but do you want to stop that too? Where do you stop?
Excuse my rant, but I am all in fgavour of animal WELFARE, but this is about making teir lives better. A lot of animals would not be there at all if we didn’t care for them.
The Queen wears fur too, when are we going to start asking her to stop?
Just a thought,
Stu x
