Cat Fur is Rife in Switzerland

If you thought that the cat and dog fur trade was confined to China, think again. The news is that a healthy, if secretive, trade in the skins of cats is rife in Switzerland, selling from as little as five Swiss francs (£2.50) per pelt. What’s perhaps even more shocking for Britain’s kitty lovers, is that it’s not unusual for the remains of the animal to be cooked with thyme and eaten. You know what I think? This is no more of a travesty than the rest of the fur and meat trade. I am a great cat lover, I have a cat as a companion animal myself, but all animals are the same, and one being killed for it’s skin or flesh is really no different than it happening to another.

Those Swiss are a joke., they are bringing in rules and exams for dog owners., to ensure humane standards:let allow this horrendous fur trade to go unpunished. Who said they were only good with cuckoo clocks ?

Ellis - I notice you live in Canada, the home of the seal hunt - perhaps you could focus your energy at a local level and try and drum up support for the hideous cruelty that goes on there.

Okay, Im just gonna say this. Cats are so loving and loyal and lovely. Houshold pets, right? Mines like that. On a recent study, swiss people have confirmed they love all cats and domestic animals. Hah! Whatever.

FUR IS DEAD, SWITZERLAND. FUR REAL.

The Swiss are two faced little mountain men, that’s all they are, famous for their cruelty in battle. Why else does the Pope have Swiss Guards looking after him? It isn’t because each guard is chosen if he looks good in the colourful uniform! The Swiss are a brutal, unpleasant and dull people - same as the Chinese. Both races, and others like them, will only change their ways if world opinion, and world MONEY, goes against them. START HATING!

Sure zenophobia gets us nowhere, but what action do you propose?

Dear PETA friends,
As a Swiss national but feeling more multinational I am very angry about this horrible fur market! How come in 2008 people still using animal fur? Its a crime against nature and terribly unfair to lovable and innocent animals! As an ex-activist I have always been fighting against any kind of violence towards animals. I am also a member of the FFW in Switzerland who are famous for acting against these horrors! PETA KEEP UP THE FIGHT! thank you so much!!!

To those of you who have commented and do live in switzerland, surely you are in a prime position to contact newspapers and such to get this stopped, we all tend to forget we are all earthlings, eyes, nose, mouth, teeth, digestive system, baby birth and feeding, really we are all built the same, unfortunately many earthlings were not given the power of speech which makes them all so vunerable to what we call humans who think they can exploit them in any way they choose, cause pain and suffering with no compassion at all. Just think if all of these rolls were reversed and the animals had the power to take out babies away from us at what ever age those chose to do so and killed them because the younger they were the more tender the meat would be, how horrific would that be, yes it is like a horror story well I often read horror stories like this all the time.

To answer above message I already sent many mails to the local newspapers. One of them was published! It was about the horrific baby seal hunt! I hate this to carry on it makes me sad and depressed! many people here feel the same. For the cats its the same story! We cannot catch those who are stealing our cats from the streets or in our gardens! Its like a big “mafia”…Be sure that if we could catch them they would regret it for the rest of their “useless” lives! THANK YOU PETA!

Susan, very good comment, it’s great to send letters to relevant media and other interested parties (members of parliament etc..)

You may misunderstand the power of a single letter, but it’s important that as many people send items in as possible.

SB - never a truer word spoken:

“Cats are so loving and loyal and lovely.”

Although I’m sure our companion cat Cheech is secretly getting fed by the neighbours, so definitely loving and lovely, but not necessarily loyal :)

What gets me is how can fur have the tag of luxury. what could be easier than take an animal breed it til it almost dies, ripp the skin of its back. Its must be the cheapest material in the world yet they charge a lot of money for someone to wear a pound of meat as clothes.

Hate fur hate designers how are too lazy to make something beautitful. Safe yourself some money and shop in your local store.
