Breeding Chimps at Edinburgh Zoo

You may remember me telling you that Morrissey was a bit miffed at Edinburgh Zoo over their upcoming chimp enclosure plans. Well, PETA are pretty peeved too. So once again we joined forces with other animal protection groups (12 of them to be precise) and let the zoo’s CEO know how we feel.

Brilliant! The suggestion proposed in your letter is such an obvious, caring solution to using captivity as a healing process to damaged, mistreated chimps, I could weep. With today’s excellent technology and wildlife documentaries we don’t need zoos anymore. The evils of zoos (along with circuses and rodeos) should be part of a child’s education. While they are still here they should be used as sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers. Good luck with your letter. I hope it falls on intelligent, compassionate ears….

I thought that living in South America, i would expect to see this kind of abuse and inhumanity.
But coming from Europe, i would expect much more.
Please set an example, and be humanely considerate.
It is a real shame and pathetic.
Please open your eyes and hearts.
Thank you

I heartily agree. This plan reeks of a calculated and transparent decision to reap publicity, not supporting conservation as the zoo postures. I would urge anyone reading this to contact the Scottish Tourist Board (the mailing address or Email contact is easily available on the web) and let them know how badly this decision reflects on the reputation of their great country; and that you will redirect your tourism and purchasing dollars elsewhere.

I cannot stand hearing about any animal in captivity. This should not be allowed.
Your letter gets the point across and is very well put. We need to educate people and get rid of zoos, along with the people that abuse animals.

I was brought up in South Africa and witnessed at first hand wild born primates living in the bushes near our home. They were confident, natural and content whilst the impression that I got from the ones behind bars in this country was quite different. They seemed to know that they were there for the soul benefit of entertaining the human visitors to the zoo, and not for their own well-being. I beg all of you at Edinburgh Zoo in favour of breeding more chimpanzees to live unnatural lives in captivity, to think again and use the funds available to improve the conditions of the ones you already have.

how can anybody not see the sadness in the eyes of these intelligent beings, when imprisoned, taught “tricks” and human behaviour. the results of which take away everything that is beautifull in all animals.
